David Bowie - ★ (Blackstar)

David Bowie - ★
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...lbum_cover.jpg

Track Listing:

1. Blackstar
2. Tis a Pity She Was a Whore
3. Lazarus
4. Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)
5. Girl Loves Me
6. Dollar Days
7. I Can't Give Everything Away

5/5 for me. Whereas The Next Day was a return for Bowie, and a return to form for his career, Blackstar is a masterpiece founded on Bowie's newfound musical energy. It's exciting and invigorating, and makes Bowie important again.

grindy 01-07-2016 07:37 AM

Thanks for reminding me it's been released!
Can't wait to check it out.

Cuthbert 01-07-2016 09:21 AM

This is out? Did it leak? OP can you send me a PM pls.

JGuy Grungeman 01-07-2016 02:46 PM

I don't know about you, but I found the full album on YT. It's there, so what the heck. Cool album. I recommend it.

grindy 01-07-2016 03:12 PM

Really liked it. Certainly among Bowie's best.
I didn't even think it was that experimental. Yeah, the song structures and arrangements were at times unconventional, but not more far out than some of his other stuff. I was often reminded of Outside.
There are plenty of catchy and often beautiful melodies and Bowies voice is still as good as ever.
There are no bad songs, but the last two were less interesting than the others.
Because of that it gets a 4 out of 5 from me for now.
It might still develop into a 5/5 over time.

Did you Youtube it?

EDIT - fuck it, just gonna buy the CD and stop being a thieving twat. AutoRip on amazon when you purchase a CD.

grindy 01-07-2016 03:19 PM

Nah, the download can be pretty easily found.
Although all the downloads seem to have a slightly ****ty quality for now.

Nice one, think I'll wait until it's officially out. Can't download it yet. I think the digital download is 320kbps.

There are even lossless downloads, but if you try to convert them to 192 kbps VBR, the bitrate becomes around 130 kbps, which most likely means that was the bitrate to begin with.

Hypocrisy 01-07-2016 07:00 PM

Gonna look for it on YouTube. Had no idea it was out yet.

The quailty sounds pretty crappy as advertised. Gonna wait and give it another shot later.

JGuy Grungeman 01-07-2016 07:46 PM

As soon as you listen to it, I'd love to discuss it. I'd actually go on a Bowie marathon right now if I didn't just get back into Simpsons.

Plainview 01-08-2016 01:12 AM

High quality version in 320 from the CD guys: https://mega.nz/#F!kk9HlBhS!fN3BzoUz2fJ7eAG4kXZeqw

It's absolutely mega. Love the free jazz sections and the mixture of progressive song structures with the jazz and DnB elements. Some strong song-writing. Sue sounds fantastic. Best thing he's done since Scary Monsters, and that's legit this time.

Cuthbert 01-08-2016 01:39 AM

:D that one always gets said when he releases a new album

Sounding strong from the brief listen I gave it last night. I'll check it out properly this evening.

I know, I know! But possibly with the exception of Outside (need more listens to form a proper opinion), it really is the strongest thing he's done.

Pet_Sounds 01-08-2016 06:48 AM

Never mind Scary Monsters, this is on the same level as the Berlin trilogy.

JGuy Grungeman 01-08-2016 08:56 AM

I need to give Low and Heroes relistens. I never could get into Low, because the songs were shorter then they deserved.

Frownland 01-08-2016 09:28 AM

Just gave it a first listen, I thought that it was great and was only disappointed with the closing track. I especially loved the horns on this one.

JGuy Grungeman 01-08-2016 09:34 AM

I thought the closing track was great. A high and cheery note to end haunting music. It reminds me of It's Such a Beautiful Day, where the movie's kind of depressing but t ends happily and beautifully despite the inevitable.

Frownland 01-08-2016 09:38 AM

I just found it to be pretty lackluster. It's Such a Beautiful Day ****ing rules though.

Wow that is high praise indeed.

EDIT - title track is really good. I'm glad I avoided everything that was released before I had a chance to listen to the album in full.

grindy 01-08-2016 09:54 AM

Yeah, I agree that it's on par with the Berlin albums.
I hope people won't crucify me for this, but I might even enjoy it a little more. While I do really like the instrumentals from that era, the division of vocal tracks and instrumental tracks on Low and Heroes weakened them as albums.

I saw bits of it last night, it's a bit weird. Same as the second one.

Scary Monsters is my favourite Bowie though...

grindy 01-10-2016 09:27 AM

Loving the album more and more.
It's a solid 4.5 with me now, steadily going towards 5.

Cuthbert 01-10-2016 03:53 PM

My CD came today. Strong album, will wait a week before voting. The last track is one of the best tbh surprised people aren't rating it.

Plainview 01-11-2016 03:15 AM

Well **** guys. The album takes on a whole new meaning lyrically when you realise it's about his cancer/death.

"I've got scars that can't be seen"
"Something happened on the day he died"
"Look up here I'm in heaven"
"I'll be free. Just like that Bluebird"
"Where the **** did monday go?"
"The clinic called. The x-ray's fine"
"It’s all gone wrong but on and on. The bitter nerve ends never end. I'm falling down"
"I know something is very wrong
The pulse returns the prodigal sons
The blackout hearts, the flowered news
With skull designs upon my shoes"

RoxyRollah 01-11-2016 03:32 AM

Obviously written about mortality.I love the fact that he waas an artist up till he went. Its all bowie all day....

grindy 01-11-2016 03:44 AM

Listened to the whole album again.
Most emotional and heartbreaking musical and lyrical experience I ever had.
∞/5

Cuthbert 01-11-2016 03:55 AM

1 in the UK, 2 in the US, but I imagine it'll reach 1 in the US now.

grindy 01-11-2016 04:26 AM

Not in the german charts yet.
Don't disappoint me, you nazi bastards.

I think it's just hit me how incredible the whole undertaking is in this context.

Bowie laid bare his battle with cancer and his proximity to death right under our noses without our realisation, and consequently, the album becomes a chilling and triumphant obituary that seals a legacy forever. Watching the videos back for Lazarus and Blackstar now is so strange and dark, but so emotive at the same time.

That image in the Blackstar video of the dead starman with the jewelled skull is pretty unnerving.

I wonder whether there was ever another musician who was able to leave like that.
The only comparable thing that comes to mind was Mercury's "The Show Must Go On".
Oh, and Cash's version of "Hurt", although I don't think his death was as imminent as the other two's.

The Batlord 01-11-2016 10:24 AM

I haven't given Bowie that much of my time, but I'm currently downloading a bunch of his ****, and this album will be up first. Time to fill this massive gap in my music knowledge.

Tristan_Geoff 01-11-2016 10:34 AM

This album is really neat, the atmosphere and everything, the jazz, really ties it in nicely together. Will give this some more listens sometime soon.

Yep, loving it.
