I really don't know what rating to give it yet. Needs another listen. Really like some parts of it, but I think there are too many tracks without direction.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 02-14-2016 01:15 PM

When the album premiered it was a 4/5 for me. I felt the short length was perfect, and while there were a few below average tracks, it's nowhere near the mess that the album is now. A 3/5 for me, and while I do enjoy it, it just feels like a step in the wrong direction after his last two projects were so great. Still, I can see myself listening to it a fair bit in the future, and there's definitely some strong tracks.

Justthefacts 02-14-2016 10:20 PM

The Life Of Pablo is to Kanye what Hail To The Thief is to Radiohead

YorkeDaddy 02-15-2016 05:53 AM

I ****ing love it

FaSho 02-15-2016 06:29 AM

I'm so conflicted. It's so messy...but I think that's intentional? I think I love it, but it's going to take time to sink in. Freestyle 4 is probably his worst track ever though

Title: The Life of Pablo
Artist: Kanye West
Genre: Hip Hop
Familiarity: Extremely, I've heard his whole discography

1. Ultralight Beam: What a way to start an album. I love the reversed synths mixed with the gorgeous gospel singing, and Chance's verse is utterly fantastic. Definitely the best-rapped verse on the whole album. I understand this was initially intended to be the closer, I think it would've worked exceptionally in either spot. There's something weirdly both goosebumps-inducing and catchy hearing Kanye say "we on an ultralight beam" as a gospel choir belts out amazing stuff behind him. There's kind of a dichotomy there with Kanye's absurdity on one hand and the pure, angelic sounds of a black choir on the other.
2. Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1: I absolutely adore the production on this one (a statement I'll be making a lot throughout this review). A lot of people criticize this song for having the goofy set of lines "Now if I **** this model/And she just bleached her *******/And I get bleach on my t-shirt/I'ma feel like an *******"...and I don't blame them because that's pretty silly. Doesn't really hurt the track for me though, I especially love the moment the beat kicks in around 30 seconds in. Awesome stuff going on there.
3. Pt. 2: This track is much more rap oriented and I'm not quite as huge of a fan of the long mostly monotone verse Kanye busts out here. It's not quite that memorable after that but still enjoyable. I kinda dig the weird Imogen Heap-esque vocal near the end (actually is this a sample of her? I wouldn't be shocked).
4. Famous: I like the vocal hook that Rihanna does here, and the verses are solid with a nice dark beat. I also really enjoy the "bum bum bedum" thing that's going on in the second half, it's a lot of fun to listen to and weirdly catchy.
5. Feedback: Fucking love the synthy/guitar/whatever instrument that fronts this track most of the time. Awesome production on here the entire time, although the rest of the song isn't particularly memorable.
6. Low Lights: This one just sort of bores me, it's definitely a "low" point on the album which makes the title very apt lol. It does seem like an interlude of sorts I guess but there's a couple more interlude-esque songs coming up soon so this is not exactly my favorite stretch of tracks.
7. Highlights: Definitely better than Low Lights, this one has actually grown on me since first hearing it. There's nothing particular special here, it's just a solid Kanye track that comes and goes. I dig it.
8. Freestyle 4: This one's really weird. I love how it starts with the spooky sounding production that reminds me of a haunted house on Halloween or something. Near the end of the track though I'm not entirely sure what's going on anymore and it seems like Kanye's losing his damn mind. If he had developed the first half into the second half better this could've been a superb track.
9. I Love Kanye: Pretty nice little rap here from Kanye. Short, sweet, and to the point.
10. Waves: This one delayed production because Chance really wanted it on the album. I think the record is better for it primarily because this track breaks up the darker rap heavy tracks that we'd started to get into. This one has some very bright, fun production that reminds me of Graduation. It's kind of got a cheesy sound but I really don't mind it at all.
11. FML: Competes with Ultralight Beam for my favorite track here. The production is impeccable, and Kanye's rapping really works. I also think these are the best lyrics on the record, he makes some interesting references and rhythms here. The Weeknd's presence on this track is actually great, I love his hook as the chorus. The outro is simply sick. Just an awesome track through and through.
12. Real Friends: This one's been out for a while but I hadn't heard it until the album actually dropped. Definitely a solid track but it kind of flies by without making a huge impression on me.
13. Wolves: I really love the vocal sample that serves as the background here. The last minute of the song is awesome and reminds me of the music that plays to introduce the final boss of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Which is awesome in my book, thanks for the nostalgia Kanye. I love the dark feel to this track, it's a style that's hit-or-miss on this album but this song is definitely an example of a hit.
14. Silver Surfer Intermission: This obviously isn't an actual song but I kind of hate the inclusion of this. It's just pointless and inflates the runtime by another minute.
15. 30 Hours: This song isn't bad by any stretch but it's pretty long and I don't feel like it needs to be on the album. There's some pretty crappy lyrics thrown in here and there and it's not particularly memorable which is kind of what you want when you're winding down a record as long as this one. I think you could cut this out completely and you'd have a better album.
16. No More Parties in LA: I think the only track I heard before release simply because I couldn't resist checking out a Kanye track that features Kendrick. Didn't disappoint. The song isn't perfect but Madlib's production combined with Kendrick's excellent verses make this one of the best on what is a truly excellent album.
17. Facts (Charlie Heat Version): Cool use of samples on here, I really enjoy the intro. This is another really solid track that's heavy on Yeezy rapping and utilizes some of the darker, more booming beats that is on this album a lot.
18. Fade: Awesome beat on this one, I really dig that funky bass. This seems like a strange track to end the album on to be honest, but I guess there weren't any notably better options so this is what we have. Solid outro but I feel that Kanye should've gone for a bigger, more epic finale.

End Result: I obviously love this album overall. It's a little uneven and goes to some weird places but as a whole there's some brilliant production and as a musician it's truly a pleasure to listen to and analyze.

Love or Hate?: True Love

I thought TLOP was genius and inspiring, ****in with this heavily right now.

Machine 02-21-2016 11:15 AM

I thought it was pretty good, but not nearly as good as Yeezus. Maybe same level as MBDTF, I'll have to give it a few more listens to be absolutely sure though.

Basically the same.

Cuthbert 02-21-2016 07:08 PM

I haven't had the time to listen to this more than once all the way through but it sounded decent on first listen, any news on the updated release?

Goofle 02-21-2016 09:06 PM

Can't imagine there will be any changes. Kanye hasn't said anything about it on twitter from what I can tell. I'm guessing they only say stuff like that to try and prevent people from downloading it.

Justthefacts 02-23-2016 09:14 AM

James Blake didn't end up on this record like hoped, but the last few moments of Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2 could somehow be correlated to him. Maybe not.

viettungvuong 02-26-2016 06:48 PM

I think it's a quite good, but worse than Yeezus.

Key 02-29-2016 09:47 PM

That album art is the ugliest album art I've ever seen.

I'm surprised he is still relevant, especially after announcing his interest to run for US President. Tapping Kim K's infamous ass has sent his ego through the roof.

Isbjørn 04-01-2016 02:05 AM

I haven't listened to it, but . . . are ugly covers okay if made ironically?

tate10dt 04-18-2016 12:41 PM

Finally heard the album this weekend. Definitely can't say that Kanye is unoriginal or doesn't have his own style, and I like the uniqueness of a lot of the beats and how weird some of the lyrics are. Waves and Wolves are my favorite tracks. Still haven't loved a Kanye album since The Graduation

Justthefacts 04-21-2016 12:52 AM

MBDTF
Yeezus
College Dropout
The Life Of Pablo
808's & Heartbreak
Late Registration
Graduation

djchameleon 04-22-2016 05:57 AM

FML and Wolves are definitely my two favorite tracks on Pablo. Has anyone gone back and listen to it again after all the changes that were made to it. Since, I really like Wolves that is the only one I have heard with the new changes so far but I will re-listen to hear the others soon.

Here is a list of all the changes that happened for those who care:

Chance the Rapper has a new line on “Ultralight Beam”
“Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1” includes a woman's backing vocals
Line altered on “Famous” but thank god it wasn't the T-Swift one
The industrial sound effects on “Feedback” and “Freestyle 4” have been modified
He rerecorded his first verse on “Waves”
“FML” sports minor improvements that make it a smoother listen
Album closer “Fade” has received edits and an actual conclusion
He took out Frank Ocean's part from Wolves and made it, it's own track while adding back Sia and Vic Mensa.

Frownland 04-22-2016 02:19 PM

I gave it a cursory listen when it dropped on Spotify, but it just kind of sat in the background while I was doing whatever I was doing at the time. The only thing I remember about it was being disappointed that it wasn't Yeezus 2.0. I'll revisit it soon, but my guess is that I'll just be bored with it.

Ninetales 04-22-2016 04:21 PM

haven't listened to the changes (but honestly I don't think ill bother). "FML" is by far my favorite, "Wolves" and "Real Friends" are good too. The rest I was pretty indifferent to. Pretty standard Kanye album to me - a few really good tracks and then the rest I don't care for.

Coulter 05-17-2016 05:57 PM

i think yeezus wasnt a good album at all , the life of pablo seems more put together ... but still i think kanye is reaching now and trying to stay relevant in mainstream

Nutist 07-11-2016 03:15 PM

It's allright, i guess. Not really my style though.

Basic. So you enjoyed Yeezus then I take it?

Philip Rehnlund 08-07-2016 10:50 PM

I enjoyed LoP. Wolves and Real Friends are very good tracks. If it weren't suggested by a friend, I wouldn't probably give it any attention

Naubel 08-09-2016 06:07 PM

"Real Friends", "FML", "Wolves", "Waves", "30 Hours" and "Fade". Other than that, not really a fan of the rest.

Juliangrant 08-09-2016 09:55 PM

I loved it, but I give 3/5 for the album. It is good, but not the best. Yeah, I do enjoy them.

yovasmusic 08-12-2016 01:26 AM

pretty solid album but too much autotune

popcorntoyphonedrink 08-26-2016 11:31 AM

The Life Of Pablo is Kanye being pretentious and being a pseudo intellectual. It's weird ever since yeezus, he has strongly become those two things. I liked college dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation, but after that, it was just going to s**t. This album is just F****n terrible, he first off uses autotune, like how are people going to take you seriously when you use autotune? this isn't the 2000's where a majority of pop was filled to the brim with autotune. Another thing is the songs are really boring and go on for way too long like what is common with pretentious artists.
And third, kanye's lyrics are terrible and full of pretentious and pseudo garbage.

Is pseudo garbage great art that acts pretends that it's garbage?

Not saying Kanye fits that description, I just want to be clear.

I'm confused.

Silly Canadian, doesn't even know what act pretend means.

Lucem Ferre 10-06-2016 12:02 PM

I like how most people scrutinized Kanye for using autotune because everybody else is doing it and this one person scrutinized Kanye for using autotune because nobody else is doing it.

Idk, perhaps they live under a rock?

Justthefacts 10-07-2016 02:32 AM

Perhaps Kanye's the greatest living artist and none of us want to accept it, except me

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 10-07-2016 04:34 AM

And me
