Eminem - Revival

It's leaked.

Maajo 12-14-2017 08:04 AM

I can't rate it until I hear the whole album, but the songs I heard were pretty damn sick.

i like some of his stuff, but calling him anything other than "pretty good" is hilarious

I dunno, you gotta pretty damn good to be the top selling recording artist for a decade.

Wrong. Being popular is only a sign of popularity. Quality varies.

Popularity means a lot of people think you're good, right?

It means that a lot of people listen to their music, but that commonly means pulling from the lowest common denominator aka casual music fans aka musical morons with no taste that wasn't printed on their tongue by the radio, so it's not a good way to gauge quality.

Eh, lots of people who aren't casual fans listen to Michael Jackson and The Beatles. They make good music.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-14-2017 03:52 PM

you can't pick and choose. either sales make you objectively good or they don't (spoilers tho they don't)

if people listening to michael jackson and the beatles is what makes them great then the same can now be said for taylor swift and one direction

no disrespect to taylor

Popularity means appealing to a lot of people and the majority of people are unfortunately casual music fans. Are great artists occasionally popular? Yes. Are great artists occasionally obscure? Yes. Are garbage artists popular? Too often. Are garbage artists occasionally obscure? Not often enough. Popularity is not consistent enough to act a cut and dry way to show that something has high artistic value. If you think an artist has something to offer, tell us what that is. It's a much more logical way to establish quality. Popularity is only valuable as trivia and good news for artists that you support.

Maajo 12-14-2017 04:03 PM

Frank Zappa was a big fan of The Beach Boys, The Monkees, The Beatles and other bubblegum pop that lots of people don't like fellas. I'm pretty sure he knows what good music sounds like, I think I know what good music sounds like, I'm sure you guys know what good music sounds like too. If you think you're gonna change my mind yous bes mistakin, because I'm pretty damn stubborn.

Either way, once again I don't think this discussion has a lot of hope of progressing into anything beyond where it is now, so I'm gonna go ahead and check out of it. I'll check back in tommorrow after I've listened to it in full.

I don't know about you, but I usually like the same things about a lot of artists. Do they have charisma? Are their songs interesting? Do they write lyrics that have some sort of value? That's basically it dude. It doesn't need to be much more complicated than that. :thumb:

He liked them because he enjoyed their music, not because they were popular.

Have you heard his thoughts on multi-platinum artist Jethro Tull?

Then say "but they have so much charisma and have fascinating songs" instead of "but they're popular".

That's fine I guess, but hopefully you can see why we're laughing at you for treating popularity as a barometer for quality if it happens again.

Not sure about the first bit either tbh.

I prefer his harder style and think Tupac's annoying. Both are 3/10 at best.

You've never heard anyone say Jay-Z is the greatest rapper of all time?

That is mental I don't believe that at all. The idea he is #1 is pretty common partly down to Jay-Z pushing it himself. Plenty of rappers have said it, plenty of publications have ranked him as #1, lots of people I know who don't really follow Hip-Hop consider him #1 as well.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-14-2017 08:07 PM

i can promise you in my entire life i have not heard that said even once

Yup, I've heard it or at least heard that he's in the discussion. He's very important to the history of hip-hop, and he's released some of the most acclaimed albums of the genre, so I can see their point even though I've never really cared too much for his music.

Tupac gets a lot of cred from basic bitch sources and more appropriate sources. Much higher rated and he died before he had a chance to lose fans over time.

Again, not sure I agree with that. Maybe within some Hip-Hop circles but even then, I don't know. The Source ranked Jay-Z over 2Pac (at number 4, Pac was 5. 1, 2 and 3 were Rakim, Nas & Biggie), among rappers themselves, it's pretty even as far as I can tell and both would be at the top.

Both of them are overrated (for different reasons) and not top 20 for me anyway.
