II isn't getting all that better then.
More or less the same thing...Mellow pop-rock.
I guess some ppl who enjoy simple strait forward pop music would like this, but it's just a bit bland and boring for me.
I'll give it another go later...wasn't all that bad on first listen. Re listening it made me kinda sleepy last time.

I really enjoy Blackfield, but out of Steven Wilson's various projects, they would definitely rank behind Porcupine Tree and No-Man. I would probably listen to them before I would fire up Bass Communion and IEM. Either way, there are some great melodic Rock songs to be found on those two albums.

Wait a minuteee. Steve Wilson is part of Blackfield? That is really disappointing, they really bored the helll out of me. Steve can certainly do better.

II is allright, Self titled is just a bore.

Compared to Porcupine Tree, I would say that they are boring... but there are some nice songs. I definitely don't give them the mileage that my PT discs get. Heaven knows Steven Wilson can't limit himself to one genre, so that is probably his "contemporary" outlet. No-Man is a 180 degree turn from both bands, and IEM and Bass Communion are completely different. Give the guy credit for being able to churn out so much stuff... even if some of it isn't as exciting. 'Tis better than having some of the more Pop sounding stuff come out in Porcupine Tree, don't you think?

Yeah, it seems you are right. But with genres I am like Wilson - one isn't enough for me, I need more. And I admire he is able to make so many projects which are so different.

I admit I love Blackfield - they were for me first step to music of S. Wilson.
Now I can say Porcupine Tree are much more better and somehow I don't like live album of Blackfield, there is something weird in their live sound...
Blackfield II is better than Blackfield I but both albums have some songs which make me feel "Yes, it's nice music." Cloudy now, End of the world, Epidemic and This Killer are my favourite.
Sometimes I really need some easier music, for example before sleeping and Lullaby is ideal lullaby :D

Interview about Blackfield II and (small) differences between I and II

I heard a few of their songs on Myspace, and i'm not sure if i like them.

Which is their most accesible album?

Blackfield II :)

If you aren't against pop-rock, you could try it.
They have only two albums - Blackfield I and Blackfield II.
Blackfield II is better so try this album. In my opinion it has some really good melodies.
But it depends what you expect... If you need some complicated music, you won't like it. If you like easy melancholic music, it's ok.

This is my favourite song from Blackfield II and second favourite by them in general.

And here is preview of Blackfield II

mrguy 02-25-2010 01:47 AM

I'll give it ago. Usually pop-rock isn't very enjoyable...usually a bit bland for me. But SW created PT, so I'll trust him with this one.

Petula07 02-25-2010 04:28 AM

Well, you can trust him but... this is NOT Porcupine Tree, it's very different.
He loves ABBA and in some interview he said he is interested also in nice pop-rock melodies.
Blackfield is probably the result of ABBA influence together with influence of Aviv Geffen :)
