I don't think it ever was a dirty word. I'll admit that I love pop music.

Only by people too insecure in themselves far too desperate to appear both knowledgable and with taste.

And no saying that you like 'Intelligent pop like the Smiths' doesn't count either

Not for me. There's plenty of pretty commercial stuff that I listen to and actually quite enjoy

There is lots of good Pop out there. Just a case of looking. Prefab Sprout are a perfect example of a good quality Pop band.

Why can't people be a fan of both avant-garde and pop? They both serve there purpose.

Pop has an unfavourable connotation. Many think of boyband and tween bands and mainstream fab bands as pop, when in truth it's just Popular music, and even indie nowadays is popular. Pop is a meta-category, not really a genre on its own.

Perfect answer! When people say the word 'pop' images of Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys conjure up in their heads.

But, as you said Roygbiv, pop is a meta-category. And in addition, it's becoming increasingly abstract and difficult to define.

It's not a dirty word for me. There are plenty of pop songs that I like, and plenty of pop artists who are very talented too.
