What is pop? (lyric, singer, hardcore, indie, metal)

Thats classic. I can imagine my dad doing that. My dad is so narrow minded, admittedly he is not quite as narrow minded as I made him out to be in my last post however he did once tell me "If its not Dire Straits, it's ****!"

Heh. My dad is pretty open-minded about music for a guy in his 60s, but he's told me on several occasions that he doesn't really like any rock music "after they added all that distortion", which I find hysterically funny.

To me pop=popular, though it has a definite sound too, like I'm not sure how popular the Cars ever were, but they sure are pop.

Yeah but it all depends what you've been listening to I guess. My dad would probably say the same even though a lot of the 60's/70's stuff I listen is quite distortion/psychedelica heavy.

I always thought it was just a cute way of saying bubblegum (*pop* sound) but later I took it to mean popular music which in industry slang used to mean bland but wholesome music that appealed to a mainstream audience who liked anything from Barry Manilow to Hannah Montana and Kelly Clarkson. Now it can mean anything that appeals to the major demographic listening groups who buy the most music. That means hip hop artists like Jay Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne and rock artists like U2, Def Leppard and Aerosmith. And with more artists like Gwen Stefani, Britny and Justin working with rap producers, pop is getting more crunk than bubble.

Yes, that's why I think it's so funny that he says that. But he grew up with early rock n roll and rockabilly and was already married with a kid by the late 60s so I guess the distortion revolution kind of passed him by.

Pop when you come right down to it is a reference to a songs accessibility to a comparatively wider audience than music from the same genre which it draws its style from.in other words You have Pop Metal and you have progressive Metal, pop punk and hardcore punk, indie pop and indie rock. Certain musical elements are often more conducive to a song being accessible such as simple and formulaic structure (ie. verse, chorus, verse, bridge, verse, chorus) upbeat tempo, short song duration, catchy melody & beat, non abrasive instrument timbres, and universally relatable lyric themes.
