Best Female Vocalist? (singer, album, American, African, tunes)

You know when you hear a female singer for the first time and get so damn pissed off that they don't get the plaudits that all the divas of this world get? It just happened to me again. This is absolutely gorgeous:

I just got the Billie Holiday legacy collection and was suprized about how good it is.
I recommend checking her out.

Never be surprised at Billie Holliday- awesome voice. Move onto Nina simone next. A voice to melt hearts.

I'd have to say:

Leslie Feist. (Feist)
Her vocals are amazing.

Also:
Elinor Blake (April March)
She's got the sexiest voice I've ever heard.

Those two have to be my faves.

I wouldn't call this singer 'The best' in any way..... but I'm going to say that Ai Otsuka has got to have the cutest voice in existence

I'm surprised no one mentioned Dusty Springfield. At least in her heyday of the 1960's very few could touch her diversity of ability to sing. I always thought Dusty was a black woman born in white woman's body.

Another woman that should have been mentioned with a little bit longer heyday shelf life then Dusty was Barbra Streisand (from 1962 - the mid-1990's). I know Miss Streisand is controversial to many, but her voice was probably one of the most purest of all-time and very few could hold the notes the way she could.

I'm glad someone mentioned Janis Joplin.

I also think in her heyday from the 1960's to the 1980's, Aretha Franklin was probably the best African-American solo female artist of all-time. Her version of "Respect" just grabs you won't let go as far as how well she could belt out tunes.

Two more recent solo female artists I have enjoyed (that I'm a little surprised aren't mentioned here) are Anna Nalik and Michelle Branch.

Wow I love this. I'm not sure why...it reminds me of a grownup lullaby or something. She's adorable besides.
