Well, that's going back early when I believe the terms were fairly interchangable. I think pop music is easy to spot when you hear it. But it's a very varied genre. I call the Backstreet Boys pop but I also call The Vaselines pop so I have a bit of a hard time with it.

That's the thing with genres, you can't box everything into them neatly because there are no solid lines and everything is overlapping and vague. But pop music can still be identified with a certain sound.

It is an absurdly large tag to put on an immensely varied "genre". I can name some "pop" singers that I like, but I can't see what "liking pop" actually means. It does give mainly the idea of liking anything mainstream, usually referred to as "pop".

I always considered pop music just.... popular music. Pop is actually probably one of the most varied genres, it can mean anything from the bubblegum pop of Miley Cyrus to the classic 60's pop of The Beatles, and more.

Apparently Lady Gaga considers Led Zeppelin pop.

Yeah, I'd consider music on Z100 pop.

Anyway when I worked at a library, the CD area was split into Pop, Jazz/Blues, Country, Showtunes, Classical, World... and I think that's it. So Britney Spears, Led Zep, ABBA, Cascada, Usher, 50 cent, etc would all be pop. Haha, it's the easiest way for them to classify the music I guess since it's so varied.
