Somebody made a really good point about Gaga.
That she doesn't need people to like her, she just wants people to talk about her.
Which is what everyone is doing.
What do you guys think about this?

This isn't a comment against you, Consolator; I'm just musing out loud about the topic of Lady Gaga seeming cold to some people:

I wonder if people sometimes expect a female performer to be more vulnerable than a male performer, and hold it against her if she *doesn't* seem vulnerable. I've never heard anyone say of a male performer, "Oh, he doesn't tear up! He must not be in touch with his emotions. He is cold," and disliking him for that.

It's the realization that this presentation is what our culture amounts to. I agree she is one of the best singers we have, and a flamboyant performer, too. At the same time, I find myself hoping, more often than not, that we'll be able to do better in the future.
Yes, I agree with what you say, マイケル : Lady Gaga's ostentatious emphasis on *things* (clothing, etc.) rather than mainly on the music alone may make us face something we don't like about our culture: its shallow consumerism.

That being said, one of my favorite songs and videos was always Madonna's Material Girl, and I didn't mind its shallow consumerism message at all, though I assume the song was meant to be ironic rather than an endorsement of materialism. I wonder to what extent Lady Gaga's outfits and personas are intended in the same way. Or maybe she is just having fun thinking up and appreciating new and odd things!

I agree, AwwSugar: I think she doesn't need people to like her. I don't think she is concerned so much if she appears sexy, for example. I feel a lot of her clothing isn't intended to be sexual so much as provocative and startling. I assume she *does* want people to like her music, though.

And I think of course she wants people to talk about her; this increases interest in her music, her shows.

I'm not sure if she needs people to like her music, either. I think she likes what she's doing and that's what matters. You know?
If no one liked it and she wasn't doing big concerts on stage, I'm sure she'd still be playing.

IF you're quoting the quote I think you're quoting
Multi quote your posts instead of quoting each one separately.
And no, I wasn't talking about you.

This is the quote i was referring to. granted... it is probably about gaga, but within the context where it was placed, could easily have been interpreted to mean me.

To say that you weren't talking about me doesn't make sense, since the quote I was talking about wasn't posted by you... the person who posted it would have to let us know who she was talking about. But looking back on it... probably gaga.

And thank you, someone showed me how to use the multi-quote recently.

As far as the comment about gaga not needing people to like her music, i think that's true. But the point that was being made wasn't that she wouldn't care if no one listened to her. the point that was being made was that it doesn't matter if they like her or not, as long as she has their attention. I highly doubt that gaga doesn't care about having peoples attention.
