seems to me there are plenty of people out there who legitimately like crap.

why is it so odd that some of those people got together to make more crap?

That reminds me of a hilarious David Thorpe article.

Local Scene Idiots

Identification:

http://i.somethingawful.com/mjolnir/...anic~local.jpg

These morons will drag you to the worst parties...

Even if you live in the wilds of the Yukon, there’ll be at least one ****ty local band and at least fifty idiots who turn up at all their gigs and nod along to the music (the “beers in both hands” dance). In larger towns, there will be dozens of ****ty local bands, and the scene will be bolstered by all the members of the ****ty local bands turning up to see all the other ****ty local bands when they play ****ty local gigs. The local scene idiots will be at every show, fervently yelling out requests for songs that only members of their pathetic little stratum will ever hear. Coming from a small and sceneless town, I’ve experienced firsthand the horror of a primordial music scene oozing out of an extremely shallow pool of talent, and it’s a horrific, Cronenbergesque sight. The teenagers in this dead-end town, with no outlet for being hip, were forced to wrangle their sensibilities into enjoying some truly horrific music.
Local Scene Idiots are only cool to each other. If they go two towns over, they won’t get much mileage out of knowing all the members of Butt Attack personally, because Butt Attack’s rusty van can’t make it that far afield without overheating. In minor markets, local scene idiots can never rise above “big fish/small pond status,” but that’s enough for them. “Someday,” they tragically think, “when Butt Attack gets huge, I’m going to say I knew them when.”

Musical Taste: Butt Attack.

How to Tame a Local Scene Idiot: Just start a band. It doesn’t matter how god-awful it is. The local scene idiots will be clamoring to interview you for their ‘zine or their pirate radio show before you can say Jack Robinson. Either that, or just be bored enough to go to some terrible local shows. After you lower yourself to attending a few, your scene idiot friend will call you up whenever some miserable local event is happening.

Benefits of Friendship: They’ll get you out of the house. Even if they bands they love are crap, even if the local clubs are terrible, and even if the house parties they drag you to are lame, they’ll get you out of the house, and you’ll always love them for it.

Drawbacks of Friendship: When you’ve seen every band in your town fifty times and they’ve shown no signs of improvement, you might begin to curse your local scene idiot friend for dragging you out of the house when you could have been watching Hard Copy in your underwear.

Kinda sounds like Nick Cave if he had his balls cut off.

asshat 06-15-2009 03:18 PM

Even though they suck hardcore they seem like a nice enough bunch of dudes.
I honestly think most bands, even bad ones, are started out of real passion for music...and maybe the chance of getting laid. The chances of making a good living in music are at least a million to one(even for %75 of bands on major labels), so I don't think money is ever the driving force, despite what that d-bag gene simmons says.

When "Take This to Your Grave" came out I was a huge fan. I even saw them @ Warped Tour 05. Ill never forget that summer. EVERY album that they have released since then has slowly deteriorated and now they suck ass.

Haven't seen this thread in a while, huh. Good point, asshat. You're most likely right, it probably wasn't for the money. They just poured their hearts out into music and ended-up being identified with by hundreds of thousands of twelve year old girls. Humiliating, but it pays well. In the end all that matters is that I'm not listening to them, although honestly sometimes I do... they have some catchy songs. Also, the girls are happy. Don't forget the girls.

anyone else love fall out boy??

Looking for fellow fans of my most favorite band...

Guybrush 03-28-2010 08:08 PM

You might wanna zip up your asbestos suit, heart. To those who are now thinking about something funny to write, don't turn this into a flame fest.

xi.heart.fobx 03-28-2010 08:09 PM

Ummmm.....

xi.heart.fobx 03-29-2010 06:34 PM

Wonder why my thread was moved... it now isn't even what I posted.. either way.. people act like fall out boy isn't talented... has anyone actually listened to patrick stump, the lead singer sing?? He's amazing. He's also very talented. He currently in the process of launching his solo album which he wrote, producted and composed all of the music by himself. As far as fall out boy goes, they make fun music with hidden meaning, I get it at least. You don't have to like them but individually there are pretty talented guys.

xi.heart.fobx 03-29-2010 06:39 PM

Oh.. and if fall out boy was all about the money, you wouldn't be able to get the albums off of itunes for as low as $3.99... when foile a deux was released u could get the entier album off of myspace or itunes for $3.99.... their greatest hits album was like $9.99, and out of the 30+bands I've. Seen live they have close to the cheapest ticket prices.

duga 03-29-2010 07:04 PM

What specifically about their sound do you like? Your die hard love for Fall Out Boy has inspired me to dig up other bands you may like. You will be amazed, I promise.

xi.heart.fobx 03-29-2010 07:09 PM

I like how not one of their albums are the same.. I love patricks voice and the whittiness of the lyrics pete writes. One thing I especially love is their backgrounds. Patrick grew up with jazz and pop rock, pete has an eye for cool new young bands and had a rough up bringing and joe and andy are soo in love with what they do you just know they wouldn't give it up for anything.

Exactly, their music is just supposed to be fun. It's not preachy or anything, and as far as I know they're pretty nice guys... so even though I don't like them enough to regularly listen to them, it's not like I hate them.

I know quite a few around my area.

As for Fall Out Boy, well I'm not exactly the biggest fan of them, but I'll just say that there is far FAR worse music out there. At least Fall Out Boy is catchy and is acceptable to listen to at a drunken house party. There's alot of contemporary rock bands that don't even have that going for them. *cough*Slipknot*cough*

I was down until you mentioned fiddy. Sure he's become a complete hack but Get Rich or Die Tryin was dope. Might have been Eminem/Shady Records hand in producing it, but still.

On the flip side, Shady Records is the sh-t.

Thanks, but none are needed as the town I live in did produce Stevie Wonder

They have some okay songs but they are missing the song that will make hardcore fans. The vocals are good but they need to do something with the talent, flat lyrics nothing interesting here.

Why is it the same 30 bands that are played on the radio, the same songs, every day, even if their not that good, are the ones who get like 13000 people wanting that artist when I have a list of like 300 artists sitting in front of me, all of which that Ive gotten are much more of an musical experience, and people don't even bother to find them?

Its quite obvious. Money...

khfreek 05-16-2010 07:04 PM

For anyone interested, Pete Wentz is gonna be in a heavy band (not sure what genre yet exactly) with Craig Owens of Chiodos fame

DearJenny 05-16-2010 10:26 PM

I can't stand Fallout Boy. I cant rarely understand what the lyrics are through the horrible vocals, and even when I know the lyrics it makes absolutely no sense. And Pete Wentz really is an arrogant a-hole, I hate to admit I saw them in concert at a festival and he kept blabbering on about his "beautiful" wife Ashlee Simpson and their child and his money like his life was better than everyone elses.
