Orchestral music is one thing.

A pop star branded as a great new songwriter, and then turns out maybe isnt so much, is something else.

Eh, there's only a difference between not writing your own songs for pop versus orchestral music because you want there to be one. If the music's good it doesn't matter who wrote it.

What do you think of bands playing songs that only one of the musicians in the band wrote? Are the rest of the artists in the group subpar for some reason?

says you.

We all have our reasons for liking stuff.

Fortunately, you're only a big-mouthed tool with over 9000 posts on a music forum. You dont get to decide what anybody likes, or why.

Luckily I get to decide whether or not I tell someone that their reasoning is ridiculous. In this event I decided to go for it. Who wrote the song is a nice bit of trivia, but it doesn't affect the music once I find out. Did Avril Lavigne's music change for you once you found out she didn't write it or did the song stay the same?

That type of bias only excludes you from liking music.

No and that's different in my eyes. for me the reasoning that can apply to a genre doesn't necessarily apply to another one. to me ideally a singer should write his own lyrics but in a band setting i don't mind if another member writes them cause through the ears of your average listener they all end sharing the credits.

Same with classical music. my reasoning that every musician should write his own stuff doesn't apply there either but when it comes to bands and individual artist i always prefer that the singer writes his own lyrics especially if he doesn't play an instrument cause i think being a lyricist should be part of the craft of being a singer.

you may be right, maybe the distinction is all in my head but i can't help making it.

He is right, indeed, so I don't need to regurgitate his points. There are "levels" of musicians, if you will, and I wouldn't consider Avril Lavigne to be in the serious-artists camp, such as orchestral artists. In that sense, it's not as necessary to hold her to a higher standard. I guess that ("levels"), too, can be a subjective criteria in music analysis, but it still doesn't affect if the music is good or not.

Since this is an Avril Lavigne thread, lets all her fans(and anyone else) wish her continued return to full health after her battle with Lyme Disease.
I like Avril, she is feisty. Reminds me of the character Molly Bolt from that delicious, hilarioud novel of Rita Mae Brown's, Rubyfruit Jungle. And yes, I do like her music though must admit to being much older than probably most of her fans!

EDIT- Just realized I put a video in an image link, but I'm not even gonna bother getting rid of it at this point.
