Great anti-love songs, everybody!

I was thinking today of an anti-love song I used to listen to frequently in college, but there is no YouTube video for it, unfortunately: Sheila E. - "Next time wipe the lipstick off your collar." It's a sad, pathetic song in which the woman is in a disturbingly obsequious, needy relationship with her partner who is having sex with someone else. For some sad reason...low self-esteem?...this woman is accepting his philandering and the scraps he throws her. Maybe this song would be like one that would be sung by the wife of the male character singing in "Backstreet Girl." I wish I could find it on YouTube! Here are the depressing lyrics: Quote:
But after depressing me, a great anti-love song then, conversely, lifts my spirits, because I think to myself, "Phew! At least my life isn't THAT bad. I may have my problems, but they could be worse!" :) |
oh BTW, thx for using my quote as a sig, Angel

The Mountain Goats - No Children
I hope it stays dark forever. I hope the worst isn't over, And I hope you blink before I do. I hope I never get sober. And I hope when you think of me years down the line, You can't find one good thing to say. And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out, You'd stay the hell out of my way. I am drowning; there is no sign of land. You are coming down with me, Hand in unloveable hand And I hope you die. I hope we both die. The Grateful Dead - Hell In A Bucket You analyze me, pretend to despise me, You laugh when I stumble and fall. There may come a day I will dance on your grave If unable to dance, I will crawl across it Unable to dance, I'll still crawl. Ani DiFranco - Untouchable Face So **** you and your untouchable face And **** you for existing in the first place. And who am I that I should be vying for your touch. Said, who am I? I bet you can't even tell me that much. |

I especially like the lines about how the man hopes he'll cut himself shaving and bleed forever. Exaggeration is such a good humor technique. Quote:

I am real surprised no one has said this one yet:
I love this song, it's so true: You love her but she loves him And he loves somebody else you just can't win And so it goes till the day you die This thing they call love it's gonna make you cry |

Paula Cole - "Where have all the cowboys gone"
One of the more depessing songs about not being loved. :( I include this song in the "anti-love song" thread because the man in the song is feeling the opposite of love: indifference. I remember when this played often on the radio I'd always stop (work) and listen carefully to the lyrics. The lines that especially got to me, because how she sings them convey to me her hurt and then some anger, are these: "You made friends at the farm. You join 'em at the bar almost every single day of the week. I will wash the dishes while you go have a beeeeer." |
My favorite anti-love song is probably "Baby Bitch" by Ween, which is a complete and utter telling off of an ex. It's just so damn bitter and yet so sweetly sung:
