Default Another candidate

I tend to gravitate towards non-love and anti-love songs as I find most love songs saccharine and icky, although I admittedly like a warm love song if placed in the right setting (movie scene, real life scene). However, I don't like just any anti-love song, it has to be at least executed somewhat wittily and/or with some humor. The candidates that fit these criteria are:

"Can't Get You on My Mind" - Adam Schmitt (World So Bright)

"Used to Love Her" - Guns N'Roses (G N'R Lies)

"Too Drunk to F---" - Dead Kennedys (Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death)

Honorable Mention: "The One I Love" - REM (Document) [didn't quite make the list as it's a little too direct with little wit or humor.]

Suicidal Tendencies—"Won't Fall In Love Today"
I definitely listened to this one quite a bit when I was young and fed up with the bullshit of dating. Unlike most of the songs that come to mind for me when I think of anti-love songs, it's not a bitter breakup song. Instead it is literally anti-love, a pre-emptive strike against the idea of falling in love.

The Rolling Stones - "The Last Time"
Depressing.

I love "There's Always Something There To Remind me!" I actually think of it as a love song, though, and not an anti-love song, because the singer obviously cared enough about the singee (?) to wander around remembering her.

The typos in the video were pretty funny: "If you should find you miss the sweet and tender lover we used to share..."

Ah...but you see, you *hate*. Songs that express hatred don't mean that life is without love.

Anti-love songs are all about how we deal with disappointment. Being able to express that in ways that aren't horribly destructive is *part* of love.

Haven't you ever felt angry that people you love can affect you so much that what they do can result in your feeling bad? More generally speaking, I love life, but I hate life for being finite. The fact that there is life as distinct from death means that all those whom I love will be killed off. Music lets us express our ambivalences and contrasting emotions. I feel it is better and more loving to admit them rather than hide them.

Tonight I happened upon this anti-love song, "Rotten Love," by The Briefs and I love the sound of it! I'd never heard of The Briefs before, a punk band from Seattle, Washington (The Briefs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

The song reminds me of some by two groups I like, The Breeders and Polvo, because of the jangly feel and strong beat. I also like how the lyrics don't shy away from expressing just a teensy, tiny bit of frustration:

Quote:
From: "Rotten Love" by The Briefs

Just shut your mouth, close your eyes.
You're in for quite a surprise.
Something for nothing, but nothing's for free.

I'd like to twist of your head.
I think you'd look better dead.
No change for someone, not someone like me.

Rotten rotten love, rotten rotten love, rotten rotten love.

THE BRIEFS - ROTTEN LOVE LYRICS
Cheerful, no?

The Briefs - Rotten Love

Go West- King Of Wishful Thinking

Most of the song feels like he is going to do fine getting over her but under the surface it seems like he has to convince himself that he's no longer in love with her when he is. I was going to put this in the love thread side but I guess it can be anti love as well
