Have you lost hope in mainstream music?
Do you think pop will always be the ****ty auto-tuned, computer-generated crap we often hear on the radio? Or do you think, by some incredible feat, one day popular artists will miraculously begin using instrumments in their songs? I can't really enjoy a song unless it's produced by musical instruments, and not computers. As catchy as it may be, it just doesn't get my attention.

I think mainstream music stopped being any good in the end of the 70's when 'danceable' music like disco became a hype. Music got a different meaning back then.

Depends what you consider mainstream I guess. If you just mean Top 40 pure pop drivel, then, other than a few select artists, I have.

whats mainstream music?
|
if this is talking about all mainstream music why is it in the hip-hop/rap section?
anyway, nah it's not all bad. Some select songs have remarkable producers in the background of some terrible vocals to front it. But I think there are a few that are doing alright that are considered "main-stream" |

Mainstream/top 40 stuff has been streamlined since the 70's, as s_k mentioned. That particular music is there simply to serve a need for mindless robotic background music for people that don't want to put in the full effort in music appreciation. Not that that is bad...I don't feel like putting in the effort for a lot of other art...it's just that's what it is there for. It's not getting any better or worse...it's just kind of there. Music outside of that will still be creative, though.

Yes, entirely. Mainstream is aiming for the lowest common denominator now. I think the Internet scared the industry in a heightened sense of pure conservatism. The closest thing we'll get to a rebellious cutting edge figure is Lady Gaga... and seriously, it's only downhill from there.

Yes, I'm constantly forced to listen to our local mainstream station called "The Vibe". It's atrocious stuff, it makes me really jealous of my parents whose mainstream stations played, well, better music.
