The Spice Girls were the brain-child of Simon Fuller who wanted a group to appear to teens like Boy Bands appealed to young teen girls, so they modeled after both "Josie and The Pussy Cats" and the 80's Boy Bands of the 80's like N'Sync NKOTB etc etc. really crappy Pop groups like that who were just plastic commercial imitation of real R&B vocal groups of the 70's.
Record sales don't always reflect actual achievement. Anyway the earliest girl group I know of was The Boswell Sisters back in the 30s. Then you have The Andrews Sisters. Then doo-wop and ones like The Chordettes. Then in the 60s The Supremes and The Ronettes, and others. The 70s had The Three Degrees among others. Then the 80s had Bananarama among others. The Spice Girls were far from the first girl group to sell records. Maybe they seemed fresh to some of the young audience in the late 90s, but not to most other people.

I believe you missed the point of his post. He acknowledged that there were girl groups before to sell records but not to the height of what The Spice Girls achieved in the late 90s except for ABBA which had males included anyways so I wouldn't technically count them

But could they have done what they did without those before them? I very much doubt it.

the point I was trying to make is that they paved the way for the crop of modern girl groups that popped up after them chasing the same formula they used to gain the same level of success to no avail.

But does that suggest that it wasn't that great a formula to start with, or that it could only work in a time when pop (in the broader sense) wasn't so popular enabling it to stand out more?

Their managers were told that putting the Spice Girls together was a futile effort because girl groups didn't sell. In the early 90s it was all boy bands. Boy Bands were what sold and it was boy bands record companies wanted.
As soon as the Spice Girls started shifting records there was a whole deluge of girl bands, so yes you could say they paved the way.

That's fashion, girl groups like everything else go in and out of fashion. Obviously someone who sells records will encourage others to try something similar.

It wasn't fashion before they started.

Hell the nearest girl band you could think of was Bananarama & they started 14 years earlier.

They're an r&b group, I was talking about pure manufactured pop groups.
