How big is yours?

.... NOT THAT!

How big is your music collection? How many GBs on your computer? How many physical albums? records? cassettes?

I've currently only got about 40 GBs of music. Relatively small comparing to in the past before I lost all of my music. And certainly small compared to some of you I'm sure.

Perhaps this thread is not appropriate for this section.. IDK. Just thought it was interesting to know how much everyone has.

Goofle 05-27-2014 03:48 PM

I am sure we already have a thread on this but I can't find it (maybe it was the same discussion within another thread?) so I will just post in here anyway.

232 CD's
44 Vinyl's
338 GB's of music on hard drive

GuD 05-27-2014 04:38 PM

I've gotten rid of a lot of CDs over the passed 4-5 years. If I kept them all I'd have upwards of about 400. Now I have maybe 100-150. Only a few vinyls, nothing to play them with anymore. And about 40GB of music on my computer. It's pretty much out of space, otherwise I'd have more.

Cicatrice 05-27-2014 04:43 PM

Wow. So much music. I'd likely have around 100GB of music if I didn't lose so much stuff a while back that I've yet to recover, but holy cow!! 300+GB? That's a lot of music.

Of that music you guys have how much would you say you listen to fairly regularly? Because I know with a relatively small collection I only listen to a portion of it regularly.

Cicatrice 05-27-2014 07:10 PM

Wow. That's insane! I'm more of an albums type of guy; I listen to an entire album at once, and rarely put my music on shuffle so I guess owning that amount of music would be hard for me.

ladyislingering 05-27-2014 07:22 PM

I probably have about 20 CDs, 200-250 LPs, at least 150 7" singles; I used to have about 50 cassettes tucked away (they're left at my dad's house though). My old computer had a few GB of music stored on it but I haven't bothered with my new one (there's grooveshark, last.fm, youtube...)

Wish I had more records. You can never have enough vinyl.

oh dear lord.

I could chill with you for ages.

Cicatrice 05-27-2014 08:32 PM

Wow feel free to ship some of the vinyl my way! Haha.

Seriously, that's really cool. Would love to sit back and listen to your collection for a couple days.

Ninetales 05-28-2014 07:31 AM

rotasi the god

djchameleon 05-28-2014 07:45 AM

I was too lazy to type up my collection again. I'm pretty sure I posted mines in this thread awhile ago. It is still around the same range.

Holy mother of all things Vinyl!

Rjinn 05-29-2014 03:57 AM

I've never owned a vinyl record or player in my life. I can't recall ever listening to one either. CDs did me just fine.

I have around 400-500 CDs stored in cases. I just started downloading music a year ago, and so far 46G worth.

Goofle 05-29-2014 08:34 AM

I was kinda hoping you were Dereck Higgins for a second.

Paedantic Basterd 05-29-2014 09:51 AM

It amounts to 75gb. It's ridiculous; I couldn't listen to all of this if I had it playing in the background of every scene in my daily life. Sometimes the amount of music there is in the world depresses me.

Psy-Fi 05-29-2014 10:19 AM

It's been a while since I did a physical inventory, but roughly...

1500 to 1600 12" albums
1000 or more 7" singles
350 to 400 CD's
100 or more 10" EP's
100 or more 12" singles
200 or more Cassettes
200 or more VHS tapes
100 or more DVD's
30 or more 3" CD singles
2 8-Track tapes (David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World & Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced)
1 LaserDisc (Pink Floyd - The Wall)
1 CDV (Front 242 - Headhunter)
329 GB on an external hard drive

Yeah that's my thing. Even with a "small" collection, there's not enough time to listen to it and really comprehend it. Granted, many people here may be older than me and have been listening to music a lot longer than I've been alive haha. In any event these huge amounts of music are pretty cool. My music collection is always expanding and growing.

Tristesse 05-29-2014 10:55 AM

around 6, give or take a few inches

Frownland 05-29-2014 12:08 PM

I have around 150 CD's that I've been collecting for years now as well as 50 or so vinyl that I've been collecting since last year. On my laptop I have 140 GBs of music. It's likely that 10% of that music is unreleased material I've recorded over the years.

^ If that`s only 10%, you have the most extraordinary collection I`ve ever heard of, rostasi. Clearly you must`ve robbed a record warehouse at sometime: Interpol have been notified.

I used to have about 300 vinyl albums, now I have the same number of cds that Frownland has - of which about 50 are "real" and 100 have been burned at little personal cost. In mp3 format I have 30 GB, mostly acquired since the fateful day when I joined MB.

( I notice you have a pretty good collection too, Psy-Fi; 10 times as many mp3s as me, for instance!)

jackhammer 05-31-2014 05:40 PM

Quality not quantity always. I have around 800 cd's and another 3000 albums on mp3 but I am always looking to downsizing. There is nothing worse than putting an album on and not knowing what your fave track is or what it sounds like in some cases.

Ideally I would love to just have 100 cd's chock full of the finest music known to man but there just isn't enough time to sift through it all.

But that's one of my favorite things about music.

Dylstew 06-01-2014 06:24 AM

GB's don't say much since the quality of my music varies greatly. Most things are below 320 kbps.

Let's see...My Library is 114,19 GB now. I have 285 Artists, 1.874 albums/ep's(keep in mind, there's a few that I put in there that I don't own just to show the full studio discography, so the number is inaccurate), and 22.609 tracks.

If I were to listen to all of them(and since the albums I don't own are from 11 second files this will be more accurate, but keep in mind some albums last tracks have filler of nothing to make hidden tracks hidden) I'd have to listen non stop for 50 days, 21 hours and 47 minutes.
geez.

Ofcourse, I'll never listen to everything. I just like seeing a complete studio library of the artist. I used to force myself to listen to all albums of an artist(unless 1 sucked really hard), but now I just listen to what I want to listen to and get new artists regardless of finishing everything.

I tried correctly tagging the important tags of all of these albums, That includes album art. The only thing that"s really ****ed up is the Genre Tag. My music player allows for multiple genres, but than I'd have to write down all genres of each album. That'd take ages. With folder view I have maps of all artists, than the album names, than in the albums track name-song name. For some I have all albums numbered on order and the year at the end. but it'd take way too long to do it for all of them, so I'm sloowly doing that.
Another problem with my tagging is that there's plenty of albums with not properly capitalized names(sometimes each word has a capital letter), but honestly I don't care, it'd be too much work to find and fix all of them for something so insignificant.

You can guess in what way I´ve got 99% of these digital albums.

m81b34 06-01-2014 09:28 AM

Argh, you're all so lucky. I have a lot more music than all my friends, but practically nothing compared to all of you. I have 14GB right now, however, I normally opt for the highest quality file I can download (my boyfriend made me into a quality freak). Only 1,483+ (some aren't in itunes) songs, 82 artists, etc. I have almost no space left on my laptop, and I've had to go through and delete programs I don't need in order to make room for music.

I'm not going to count the CD albums I have - they're all my parents, really, and they would take far too long to count. I don't own any vinyl, as I have nothing to play it on. But I would like to get a record player eventually.

I knew I loved music before, but I really only started collecting it a few months ago. 99% of my collection is downloaded, and 90% of it has been downloaded in the past few months. (keep in mind, I'm in my mid teens)

For those of you who collect music on your computers/laptops, how do you get it? Do you buy everything you own, or download it?

lj39 06-01-2014 06:09 PM

I had posted mine back in the thread link shown earlier..but once again:

I would say for a pretty close estimate:
vinyl - 120 albums
cassettes - 315 give or take around 10
cds - 5,000
computer/digital - around 200 gigs..

and holy moly..that's a vinyl treasure you have there rostasi..did you happen to inherit any other musicphiles collections in that or was that all picked up on your lonesome?

lj39 06-01-2014 06:34 PM

^^gotcha. If I had been exposed to more musical styles and more importantly the means to acquire them earlier in my life I would have....probably still only a third of that, lol!

*another question...anything in there that you haven't listened to as far as you know? I purposely keep a few surprises in mine just to keep my ears perked....

Zyrada 06-02-2014 12:13 PM

I'm young and stuff and just have a digital collection. I keep my metatags tidy, but it gets complicated with classical music, so qualifying things just in terms of number of artists is misleading at best. In terms of just the raw data, my personal music folder is 119 GB, and it has 17,795 files and 2,022 folders. I've cleaned house a few times and have been conservative about getting some music just because of space limitations, but I'll be getting an external HD at some point in the future to alleviate some of that. I've also only really been listening to music really seriously for... seven years or so? I'd love to have insane collections someday like some of you have.

I don't have much 22 gb
I had a lot more, my laptop didn't work one day so I lost music and other videos that I had.
Now I usually listen online, and scrobbling to last.fm

I have The Corrs cds 1995-2006, not the singles only the albums (not their recent ones).
I have a few VA collections 5 I think.
I have one spice girls album, one geri halliwell album, 2 lily allen albums, one corinne baily rae album, 4 boyzone albums and one single, 3 ronan keating albums.
Hevia one album, the chieftains 5 albums.
I have one album of israeli celtic band black velvet = קטיפה שחורה.
2 albums of another israeli celtic band evergreen = ירוק עד.

According to my Discogs profile, I have 1,784 physical items, the vast majority of them CDs. That’s too many, so the only solution was to buy more storage.

I decided to create a collection that spanned from the Sex Pistols to Daydream Nation, but there were some pre-Sex Pistols titles I’m obsessed with, so it goes back to as early as 1971 - I think. There are no repeats either (technically there’s one, and any 80s fan will spot it).

I’m new here, so I’ll post pics after I get to 15 posts. Or, you can navigate to https: //pin.it/ 4KXBozK to see the top shelf, just eliminate spaces in that url.

musicreels 12-08-2021 05:14 AM

I have a great Hungarian TV shows, bands and performers collection

dxgtCdds 12-08-2021 10:23 AM

I’ve stopped counting on how many albums, soundtracks and songs i have on apple music and soundcloud.

Tristan_Geoff 12-08-2021 10:00 PM

Over 100 albums.
Well over 200 CDs
Possibly 50ish cassettes not counting ones from my label

rostasi 12-09-2021 07:25 AM

About a million tunes.

The Batlord 12-09-2021 05:23 PM

I'd buy an old Walkman to listen to scuzzy 80s metal cassettes for sure. Something about digital Hellhammer just feels wrong.

gandhara 07-21-2022 04:30 AM

probably 1000GB
