Why are there no artists like Mariah Carey, Whitney, Celine Dion these days?

What happened to this kind of music?

Black Francis 10-12-2015 09:46 AM

You mean why aren't there more Divas with a great voice? idk, maybe its cause nowadays artist are all about their looks and their hooks not their range.

Plankton 10-12-2015 09:49 AM

That's my next venture:

Looks and Hooks Talent Agency LLC.

Trollheart 10-12-2015 10:09 AM

Why is this in the journals section??

Oriphiel 10-12-2015 10:23 AM

Mestmed asks the hard questions. I applaud the mod that approved this journal.

grindy 10-12-2015 10:30 AM

Good riddance.
All three have a good range and technique, but listening to them jerking around every single syllable in a 'soulish' way is soooo annoying.
I can dig something like that from someone with a genuinely interesting voice, like Diamanda Galas, but the usual shtick is just boring.

Key 10-12-2015 10:38 AM

This shouldn't be a journal.

Edit: never mind.

Plankton 10-12-2015 10:41 AM

Hey, it was early in the morning and I hadn't had my Metamucil yet.

^The correct answer to the question.

I think people realized how terrible it was and stopped listening to it.

If you eat icing all of the time you eventually throw up.

Man need cake.

If you eat nothing but cake you may very well end up vomiting as well. I suggest a healthy variety of meat, vegetables, and beer.

Justthefacts 10-12-2015 08:41 PM

Someone tell me they aren't a Celine Dion fan, I dare you.

With the onset of American Idol, the trend these days are younger voices. It sucks coz the vocal range is underdeveloped. By the time they get developed, they're already replaced.

Good god man, I'm thankful that genre's gone extinct, I swear it was solely created as elevator music to torture young men working at big box retail stores! Begone satan!!!

Saying things like this is giving people ammo for your roast.

But icing at least tastes good. The type of music we're talking about is more like eating cardboard.

Right! every human being on this earth loves 'My heart will go on' and if you don't.. something is wrong with you.

The only thing worthwhile about that song is the ten seconds that everyone knows. Other than that it's utter, dull crap.

Bullsh*t.

Look within your heart and you'll find you know almost every verse from that song.

And the fact that the ship sinks. Wish her career would follow suit. How long can you dine off that one ****ing song??

ChelseaDagger 10-13-2015 07:19 PM

Mariah is the only decent one you mentioned. I have to respect someone willing to surgically alter their vocal chords in order to expand their range (or so the rumor goes). The genre itself should be renamed "Mariah" and no other artists should be allowed.

Try being Canadian and having to put up with Celine Dion in every single grocery store.

To be fair, she already had a successful career before she did that song. That track just happened to amplify it even further.

Really? I'd never heard of her, and I've never heard another one of her songs on any kind of radio station since. Where does one even hear about a new Celine Dion album?

Is she one of those people who holds up the line with a ton of coupons?

She's actually one of those people who put their cart too close to the aisle right by the **** that you need. Unfortunately, Celine Dion is also one of those people who acts as if you're slaughtering their child when you politely ask them to move.

Shopping in Canada is some serious ****.

I will pledge $1 million dollars to hire thugs to make the lives of the hurricane victims worse, until Celine Dion takes back her check.

She had Falling Into You, which was released a year before the Titanic soundtrack and it went multi-platinum many times over. She also had four or five albums before that.

I only know this because my mom used to be a Celine Dion fanatic, and she owned most of her discography through 2002's A New Day Has Come.
