Top 40 Pop
Dream Pop
Alt Pop (90's)
Indie Pop (whether this means artists like LAKE or artists like Vampire Weekend should probably be decided, though I guess it'd make sense to have one for Twee Pop to differentiate)
Motown
Pop Rock (maybe more focus on 60's stuff like Beach Boys and Beatles)
Avant-Pop
Pop Rap
Traditional Pop (i.e. Sinatra or Ink Spots)
Electropop
New Wave Pop/New Jack Swing
Noise Pop

Oh, and yes I'd be down for it. Can't say I'd be great making the lists but I'm happy to participate.

Goofle 01-12-2016 05:40 PM

Thanks. I'll think about it a little more over the next few days.

Tristan_Geoff 01-12-2016 08:10 PM

What about Jpop/Kpop? It really isn't my thing but I don't think we should look it over either. This might be the thread that fills the void left in me by the Torture Chamber.

Goofle 01-14-2016 03:58 AM

Anybody else interested in this? I'll try and compile a list of genres tonight and maybe a few suggested 10's.

Tristan_Geoff 01-14-2016 08:42 AM

misspoptart 01-15-2016 07:33 AM

I'd play.

Goofle 01-15-2016 04:14 PM

Sweet. I'll keep bumping this in the hope that a few more get involved.

Oriphiel 01-15-2016 05:09 PM

I'm in. I don't know much about Pop, but why not?

Tristan_Geoff 01-15-2016 05:44 PM

Batlord's in.

Goofle 01-15-2016 07:23 PM

Can't even tell me to my face? Pussy.

Trollheart 01-16-2016 05:46 AM

IF I can squeeze it in to my mighty workload I'd be interested in supporting this. Don't know a huge amount about pop but I'd be happy to take part.

Ha ha! Joke's on them!
Spoiler for the truth:
I don't have kids!

Goofle 01-16-2016 04:27 PM

Good stuff TH. Hopefully yourself and others are turned onto some great music as a result of it.

BTW, I definitely need help with this when it comes to 'definitive' lists in some areas. I have generally avoided Pop music until the last year or two so my personal lists wouldn't include many of those that are generally be considered to be 'classics'. It's a group process anyway, so I'm sure we will get there.

And just so you know, Frostbite by Kitty is the winner of the thread. So... spoiler alert or whatever.

The Batlord 01-16-2016 04:45 PM

Just so long as this doesn't turn into a hipster elitist bull**** thread with twelve boring indie pop lists. Nothing against dream pop, but I'm convinced that it's the genre that hipster douchebags name drop when they want to sound like they listen to something other than Arcade Fire.

Goofle 01-16-2016 05:00 PM

I'll not allow it.

Tristan_Geoff 01-16-2016 07:22 PM

Let's not make this take forever to start like the rock survivor thread. I'm gonna work on at least one more list. We should plan on having this done and ready to go by next month. So do you think Indie Pop should include alt pop stuff like Vampire Weekend, or refer to Twee Pop groups? Or should they be separate lists entirely?

Tristan_Geoff 01-16-2016 07:34 PM

Noise Pop

Sleigh Bells- Treats
Joanna Gruesome- Weird Sister
Jesus and the Mary Chain- Psychocandy
Flaming Lips- Clouds Taste Metallic
Ride- Nowhere
Yo La Tengo- I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
Hum- Downward is Heavenward
Tripping Daisy- Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb
Boris- Attention Please
Dinosaur Jr- You're Living All Over Me

Hah! I couldn't agree more.

I don't plan on putting up too many lists, since I'm mostly dedicated to the rock one. BUt I'll be glad to help wherever necessary. So I'll put one up for psychedelic pop. I'll wait for more lists to come before I consider others.

1. Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
2. Love - Forever Changes (amazing album)
3. Bee Gees - 1st
4. Beach Boys - Surf's Up
5. Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle
6. Monkees - Headquarters
7. Kaleidoscope - Tangerine Dream
8. Donovan - Mellow Yellow
9. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
10. The Kinks - Something Else by the Kinks

Sorry if anyone feels that I'm uploading too many lists for these. I'm just hyped to be having a good discussion for once in a while. I kind of obsess over genres.

EDIT: Sorry! I have one more I'd like to submit.

Pop Soul

1. Laura Nyro - More Than a New Discovery
2. Jackson 5 - ABC
3. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis
4. The Temptations - Gettin' Ready
5. Diana Ross - Diana Ross
6. Amy Winehouse - Back in Black
7. Simply Red - Stars
8. Earth Wind & Fire - Faces
9. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
10. Adele - 21

Tristan_Geoff 01-16-2016 09:16 PM

Disco

Michael Jackson- Off the Wall
Chic- C'est Chic
Donna Summer- Bad Girls
Kool & the Gang- Celebrate!
Bee Gees- Children of the World
The Jacksons- Triumph
Earth Wind and Fire- The Best of Earth Wind and Fire, Vol 1
KC and the Sunshine Band- Part 3
Village People- Cruisin'
Jamiroquai- Synkronized

If Jamiroquai or Kool and the Gang don't win this I'll be very dissapoonted in you guys.

Tristan_Geoff 01-17-2016 12:59 PM

Ehhg. I feel dirty writing this one...

Emo-Pop

My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade
Jimmy Eat World- Bleed American
Fall Out Boy- Under the Cork Tree
Dashboard Confessional- The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most
Saves the Day- Through Being Cool
All American Rejects- Move Along
Taking Back Sunday- Tell All Your Friends
Blink-182- blink-182 (2003 S/T)
Say Anything- ...Is a Real Boy
The Used- The Used

Now that I think about it some of these are actually decent. Jimmy, TBS, Saves the Day, and Blink in particular. The rest, not so much.

Trollheart 01-17-2016 02:42 PM

I really can't offer any lists, since as I say pop for me was pretty much something I looked down my nose at when a teen/young adult and since I got into prog, metal, AOR etc I've given it a little more appreciation but in general know next to nothing about what goes where. So I'll just sit back and listen to albums as they come up and vote but I'm afraid I won't be any help compiling lists.

On the bright side, there won't be any "that's-not-a-rock-opera!" style fumes and rants like over at the other thread. ;)

I would suggest though Goofle seeing if you can drag in the pop princess on this. I reckon MissPopTart would be a very valuable and knowledgeable resource to have.

Tristan_Geoff 01-17-2016 03:14 PM

I'll try to make one or two more lists. Feeling burnt out from all the ones I've been doing recently though.

Country-Pop

Taylor Swift- Fearless
Toby Keith- Unleashed
Zac Brown Band- The Foundation
Carrie Underwood- Some Hearts
Garth Brooks- Man Against Machine
Rehab- Graffiti the World
Brad Paisley- Wheelhouse
Florida Georgia Line- Here's to the Good Times
Eric Church- Chief
Blake Shelton- Based on a True Story

Just curious: Are Blink-182 really considered emo in any way? I'm neither into punk (at least any more), nor into emo, but I always though they were typical pop-punk.

No. That particular album is though.

TechnicLePanther 01-18-2016 11:32 AM

Ooh, I'm interested.

Unknown Soldier 01-18-2016 03:49 PM

These survivor threads are becoming a ****ing plague. ;)

The Batlord 01-18-2016 04:43 PM

Everyone wants to be me.

JGuy Grungeman 01-18-2016 07:48 PM

At least, everyone in their wrong minds.

Goofle 01-19-2016 01:38 AM

Let's say we agree on Psychedelic Pop, what would we change about JGuy's list?

1. Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
2. Love - Forever Changes m
3. Bee Gees - 1st
4. Beach Boys - Surf's Up
5. Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle
6. Monkees - Headquarters
7. Kaleidoscope - Tangerine Dream
8. Donovan - Mellow Yellow
9. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
10. The Kinks - Something Else by the Kinks

Personally I would add an Animal Collective (MPP probably fits the bill most) and of Montreal album to rep this millennium. Probably Congratulations by MGMT as well if I'm greedy.

Tristan_Geoff 01-19-2016 09:08 AM

Well, can't Animal Collective and of Montreal fit in Avant-Pop, and MGMT in alt-pop?

JGuy Grungeman 01-19-2016 09:23 AM

I would say that those would fit as well, however, more modernized "psychedelic pop" is more neo-psychedelia than anything. So I guess Flaming Lips should leave, since it's pretty neo.

Goofle 01-19-2016 10:41 AM

Let's not get caught up in specific differentials between specific differentials in a sub genre. I'm not sure how these usually work anyway? Should I change the thread title to "Pop Album Survivor: Psychedelic Pop", then solidify the list?

Voting after we kinda agree on the 10?

Tristan_Geoff 01-19-2016 10:51 AM

Most of these other lists decide all the lists on ten before going into the first battle, so I think we should do that first. If you want to update the OP with the lists we've already done and the ones we need to do it'd help us out a lot.

Goofle 01-19-2016 10:54 AM

Yeah I'll be doing that. But I'd rather we focus on one genre at a time. So if a few people wanna have their say on Psychedelic Pop, let's get it going.

Tristan_Geoff 01-19-2016 10:57 AM

I'm good if you are.

JGuy Grungeman 01-19-2016 11:13 AM

Only replacement I'd make is Flaming Lips, as I've said. But if no one minds, I'm fine with it. It was a quick job, anyway, but if people like it, cool.

JGuy Grungeman 01-19-2016 05:44 PM

Synth Pop

1. Depeche Mode - Violator
2. Pet Shop Boys - Behavior
3. Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine
4. Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair
5. New Order - Power Corruption and Lies
6. The Human League - Dare
7. Eurythmetics - Sweet Dreams Are Made of This
8. Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)
9. The Knife - Silent Shout
10. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor

Frownland 01-19-2016 06:29 PM

Shaking the Habitual is The Knife's magnum opus (so far). Carry on.

I'm sure there are all very valid records, but again it's rather archaic. I'd have to put Fever Ray's self-titled album and 'Oracular Spectacular' on there to add a bit more balance. With YMO and Eurythmics missing out. Also agree with Frownland's point, but it's not quite as iconic or highly regarded in general.

Goofle 01-20-2016 08:57 AM

Electropop:

1. Girls Aloud - Tangled Up
2. M.I.A. - Kala
3. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
4. Ladytron- Witching Hour
5. The Bird and the Bee - Love Letter to Japan
6. Lady Gaga - The Fame
7. Little Dragon - Ritual Union
8. Róisín Murphy - Overpowered
9. Santogold - Santogold
10. Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak
