Very well done. That's brilliant.

I think you should mention that no-one is allowed to comment on Queen's classification until they've heard more than the greatest hits. Otherwise, I know there will be retarded people jumping on and claiming that Queen is a pop band because of Another One Bites the Dust and Radio Ga Ga.

That would be like saying Yes are a pop band because of Owner Of A Lonely Heart and Leave It. ;)

Agreed.

PS. I wish i could have bolded the bands whose material i own on MP3, but i couldnt keep it under the 10000 character limit, and im like Quentin Tarantino, i hate to edit....Im off for now, tomorrow i will give a complete list of bands whose songs i have on MP3.

boo boo 01-12-2006 12:19 PM

I will keep bumping this thread until its a sticky. :pimp:

Laces Out Dan! 01-12-2006 06:48 PM

This has actually helped me out a lot .... me being a guy who is very interested and loves the Genre of Prog and all of its Sub-Genres ... ... My favourites are Jethro Tull, KingCrimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Symphony X, Muse, YES, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, and Rhapsody...their may be some in which i had forgotten but those are some of my favourites

IamAlejo 01-12-2006 07:57 PM

Is Coheed and Cambria really proggy? Or just the last album?

And no ATDI? :(

cardboard adolescent 01-12-2006 08:20 PM

I only have a few suggestions, such as that you might want to mention Birdsongs of the Mesozoic under avant-prog, because they seem to typify that genre better than a couple of the bands you mentioned. Also, Slint is a really important Math Rock band, so you probably don't want to leave them out.

A great read, a little biased towards punk (you don't shed light on the other side of the argument, being that progressive rock was pompous and self-indulgent), but overall a great overview.

I believe you mean "biased against" rather than "biased towards".

boo boo 01-12-2006 09:18 PM

Anyone who has questions about a certain band and weither or not they qualify as prog should feel free to comment on this thread.

Yeah.. by "towards" I meant "regarding," as opposed to "in favor of," but you're right... GRAMMAR NAZI!!!

Im not biased against punk rock, i dont know how i could be, since i happen to like a good deal of punk rock....The Ramones are one of my favorite bands, and Alexisonfire made a point when he said that The Ramones were so anti-progressive that they were in a way progressive themselves, dont get the wrong idea, they are not prog, rock that is progressive isnt automaticly progressive rock, sounds a little like a oxymoron there but being progressive rock isnt as simple as its title suggests.

The reasons i didnt focus very much on the punk rock communities point of view is because i didnt want to go off topic and because i didnt have enough room due to the 10000 character limit.

Still, you should notice that i never debunked the claims about prog being pretentious by saying they were not true, nor did i ever say they were true, i basicly left that to the reader to decide, since its a matter of opinion anyway.

cardboard adolescent 01-12-2006 09:39 PM

It's just that this part:

made it seem a bit biased against punk, and sorry, I missed the part where you adressed people seeing prog as pretentious and self-indulgent.

I mention it several times, especialy when i explained the main reason prog lost its popularity in the 70s, people clearly got tired of its overexposure, the same fate that punk rock (or what is labeled as punk rock) is suffering today, its a continuing cycle.

Also the things i said about punk was not a negative subjective remark, but a objective fact, i never said being sloppy or basic was bad, but from a technical point of view most punk is basic in structure, and there are few punk musicians that would be considered "virtuoso's"...This is a undisputable fact, i never meant it as a negative remark...And i certainly didnt say that punk rock was lacking in quality because of this fact, not at all.

Don't worry. I didn't mean that you were biased at all. I was just being a grammar nazi .

Muzak 01-13-2006 03:00 PM

Very nice. I didn't realize that there was so many genres. There needs to be one of these education thread for every forum. :)

Done...I have some stuff from both bands but not a whole lot of material, what do you have from them already?

Laces Out Dan! 01-21-2006 10:55 PM

I own every Symphony X album..........soooooo good

Laces Out Dan! 01-22-2006 12:14 AM

I have lately gotten into The Mars Volta.....a band that a while ago i had no intent on liking at all...things change and this was for the better

Awesome...I love them too, i can hear the Floyd and Crimson influence quite prominately.

Laces Out Dan! 01-29-2006 08:25 PM

Yeah in parts i hard some Crimson coming out in there breakdowns and whatnot

Merkaba 01-30-2006 02:31 AM

Pain Of Salvation are good:)

Definitely an eerie feel to them.

boo boo 03-01-2006 04:21 PM

Damn.

Wish there was a way to keep this thread lively. :(

Do you have the album "Be"?

Merkaba 03-03-2006 02:44 PM

Nah, I saw you mention them in the sharing thread though and I was going to ask for some too but thought I'd better wait til my plate is a little less full.

Is Be their best/only album?

Laces Out Dan! 03-03-2006 07:31 PM

I think they have multiple albums...but my friend was telling me about one of the concepts in that album and it was like about how if god was one of us who lived on earth he would be just as confused as we were...something along thopse lines and it kind of intrigued me......so i thought id check it out.....no torrents for it either

Merkaba 03-04-2006 01:39 AM

So if anyone has any albums of Savatage I would be interested. I have three songs floating about "Conversation Piece", "Chance" and "Turns To Me".

"Conversation Piece" - is a good song. Rather funny in a way, when he sings "...Over a cup of Tea", the way it relates to the song title. Good instrumentation.
"Turns To Me" - is a brilliant track too. It's soft and hard, alternating between the two rather well. The guitaring is awesome and thankfully not overdone.
"Chance" - starts out in a rather orchastreal/symphonic(?) manner with chimes and what-not, then rolls into some good metal. This is pretty sweet prog metal. The vocals are clear and solid when singing low key, and manly when the music asks them to be.

I love this band. So why the hell have I only got 3 songs then... *Goes to download*

Albums people:D

Oh and LesPaul, if you don't already, I would say you'll love these guys.

Laces Out Dan! 03-04-2006 11:31 AM

OK cool......ill go download some right now..any ones in particular you are fond of?

Laces Out Dan! 03-04-2006 12:26 PM

Well i just checked them out.....They're decent i guess...maybe they have to grow on me.its kind of boring to me....but i still really wanna hear that "Be" album

Merkaba 03-04-2006 06:20 PM

Yeah I dunno eather I downloaded a couple more songs and it started to get a bit too much for me. But I still wouldn't mind an album. I just thought you'd like them since they're similar to Symphony X in many ways.

Laces Out Dan! 03-04-2006 09:48 PM

Yeah i see where youd be coming from....the majority of my friends that listen to music similar to me like them a lot

halfdeadhippo 03-04-2006 10:02 PM

The first post was well-written. Props to boo boo for writing it.
