Dream Theater from Images and Words to Six Degrees is the definition of prog metal. Most prog metal bands are just trying to replicate what Dream Theater did.

Pain of Salvation, however, is amazing. One of the most creative and emotion-inducing bands I've ever heard. I wouldn't even label them as prog metal, they're completely their own thing.
