ahhh..I know a bunch of people debate it though, so I was just checking.

Dream Theater and Pink Floyd

ShumanTheHuman 07-16-2008 08:43 AM

Rush overall but The Mars Volta recently

Progman 07-18-2008 10:37 AM

No Van der graaf generator, canterbury scene or Krautrock! boo-urns to this list

Alfred 10-25-2008 08:54 PM

I said Rush, a long-ass time ago, but now it's really between Pink Floyd and The Mars Volta.

Barabajagal 10-25-2008 09:31 PM

100% King Crimson for me.

Bulldog 10-29-2008 10:11 AM

From the little I've actually heard, Yes. King Crimson come a close second

I really find it weird that there's not more love for ELP on Musicbanter ..

Comus 01-27-2009 02:14 PM

That's because ELP are the most boring overblowntripe on this planet.

Guybrush 01-27-2009 02:25 PM

I'll agree that their output is a little mixed .. Take tarkus for example, title track is awesome. Then, when Jeremy Bender comes on it's like what happened now? :p

The stuff I like from them is really good, I think.

Probably because they, along with Todd Rundgren, were considered to be crazily pompous and self-indulgent even by the standards of most prog. bands back in the mid-late 70's, and that reputation has lingered some today.

ELP were killer live though, I'll give them that!

Guybrush 01-27-2009 03:01 PM

Of course I know about the ELP tour trailers, Carl Palmer's two and a half ton drumset and all that stuff .. But hey, pompousness isn't necessarily all bad in music. ;)

Comus 01-27-2009 03:03 PM

That's of course true, but I was generally refering to their music, what they do onstage has no effect on me considering I'm far from a fan. They just bore me witless.

Tarkus is boring? It's one of my favourite prog pieces of all time. :(

You probably have enough on your plate, but maybe you should give'em another shot one day.

The Floyd and King Crimson>This thread...

almauro 02-10-2009 05:31 PM

I'm seriously getting back into early 70's Genesis starting with Foxtrot, Genesis Live, Selling England, TLLDOB, and even Trick of the Tail. It's shocking to hear Phil Collins play drums he's so fookin good. They could play light and melodic or complex and nasty as hell.

Trollheart 02-18-2009 11:02 AM

Yeah, his solo on "Dance on a volcano" is just something else! Early Genesis certainly beats later, more toned-down/poppy one, but I'd have to say THE best years were with Gabriel (though they did some great stuff even after that) --- look at Foxtrot, Nursery cryme, the Lamb ... says it all really!

You missed Rush and Porcupine Tree.

duga 01-11-2010 11:17 PM

rush for older stuff...mars volta for newer stuff

prog is a true music lover's genre. i remember going through a prog only phase. if it was shorter than 10 minutes, i didn't want anything to do with it. everyone you hang out with always wonders wtf is wrong with you. "is this the same damn song? wtf!"

ConGrUenCy 01-12-2010 12:23 PM

Rush, closely followed by Pink Floyd.

Petula07 01-12-2010 01:58 PM

Although I love Pink Floyd... my signature says it :) I voted for Marillion.
