sleepy jack 08-18-2007 11:42 PM

Other: A Silver Mt. Zion

MHDTV 08-18-2007 11:45 PM

Thought you would say prog sucked...

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 08-19-2007 12:22 AM

I said prog sucks but in retrospective The Mars Volta.

Laces Out Dan! 08-19-2007 03:00 AM

The Mars Volta
Portugal. The Man
Rush
The Fall of Troy

Seltzer 08-19-2007 05:10 AM

Wow, this is a nice change. I voted for other since Opeth and Camel are my favourite prog bands... closely followed by King Crimson and Porcupine Tree.

I highly recommend that more people listen to some Camel.

MHDTV 08-19-2007 09:22 AM

I don't like Camel much, but Opeth is pretty good.

Laces Out Dan! 08-19-2007 01:31 PM

Camel is awesome.

jackhammer 08-19-2007 01:40 PM

Pink Floyd, followed very very closely by Fish era Marillion and Porcupine Tree.

Other:

Barclay James Harvest.

It's hard for me to choose between them and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

boo boo 08-19-2007 05:32 PM

The Floyd.

Queen do have prog elements. And they have some stuff that can difinetely be considered prog. But a lot of the stuff they are really known for is more along the lines of pop, and they were not really one of the bands that defined the genre.

MHDTV 08-19-2007 09:07 PM

I'd categorize them with Yes as Symphonic Pop.

Alexander the Grape 08-19-2007 09:18 PM

wikipedia calls Between the Buried and Me prog metal, so they must be.

They get my vote.

Symphonic POP? Don't believe I have even heard that term before.

I think you meant Symphonic Prog. And that being said I certainly wouldn't consider Queen to be Symphonic Prog.

In the prog ed thread I have them listed under art rock. Which is the term proggies use for bands that are considered by some to be prog but don't fall under any other prog category.

MHDTV 08-22-2007 06:23 PM

Sorry, yah I meant Symphonic-Prog with a poppy side. I suppose they don't fit into any one category of prog, but if you have to classify them beyond prog them they're definetaly Symphonic-Prog.

mixed meters 08-23-2007 09:44 PM

Yeah Prog Rock is awesome. LTE is releasing another album, well kind of.

Frances 08-23-2007 09:49 PM

The Mars Volta!

Music Man 08-23-2007 09:56 PM

Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Loser 08-23-2007 09:58 PM

I voted for Rush.

MHDTV 08-23-2007 10:00 PM

ELP and Rush? My least favorite of all the famous bands from the classic prog era.

Loser 08-23-2007 10:03 PM

King Crimson came in a close second...I've been listening to a bit more Rush, i can't help myself.

MHDTV 08-23-2007 10:05 PM

Probably the most radio-friendly prog that i actually like.

mixed meters 08-24-2007 01:38 PM

Pink Floyd was pretty good they seem to breed a certain type of fan though.

Haha, boo boo positively loves DT. :D

I find prog metal is quite different to prog rock. Different ideals, different fanbase etc...

MHDTV 08-25-2007 10:43 AM

Actually Rush shares a pretty big fanbase wuth prog-metal, even they don't belong to the genre. Other bands I'm not sure about.

I find them to be pretty craptastic.

Demonoid 06-06-2008 06:36 AM

Bump!

Anyways,

Prog. rock- A tie between King crimson, genesis and camel.

Albums:
ITCOTCK(needs no explanation...i prefer this over red for some reason)
Foxtrot(same as above...Prefer this over SEBTP)
mirage(holy sh!t Doug Ferguson's bass were just superb...i don't think the guitar/flutes needs to be mentioned cuz those are the highlights of the album)

Prog. metal- pain of salvation. These guys are ****ing awesome!

Albums:TPE1, Remedy lane and BE.(All three 10/10 in my book)

Are they even prog?

ProggyMan 06-06-2008 05:24 PM

'Prog' is pretty ambiguous, it basically covers bunch of different styles which share certain archetypes.

True, but with DT's sound, I think it could go either way.

ProggyMan 06-09-2008 09:18 AM

They certainly fit into Prog-Metal.

Ghostrider 06-14-2008 05:54 AM

I like most of the selections in this thread,,,I'll pick Yes and the album "Fragile", it was the very first Prog/Rock album I bought it the year it came out. It along with PF's "DSOTM" introduced me to this new exciting(At the time) style of British music. Recently I've started checking the newer prog/rock bands and I've found a great deal of new info thanks to all the banter members. It's going to take a few weeks to listen to all the new bands I've seen recommended in here.

variatingmule 06-14-2008 07:38 AM

Uriah Heep would be my pick today
