Yeah, didn't you pick that CD up in Vancouver? |

But yes, I picked up Warsawa in BC. Truly a gem of a find. Though this live CD is amazing, I've heard both good and bad things about PT's live performance. |
Snippets of the new album up on myspace:
Porcupine Tree on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Obviously hard to tell from small soundbites but we all know that we (the fans) will be on it like flies round crap come the release date. |

Trains is still my all time favorite song by them :)

I absolutely detest Blackest Eyes! Considering what Wilson can write, I think it's lazy writing with a horrible nu metal vibe, which he was actually trying to create according to audio interviews with him I have listened to. I just don't get it. Such an average song that could have been wriiten by a multitude of bands.

i'd also say it's less nu-metal vibe and more alternative band that's trying to be heavy kind of one. not saying PT is just an alternative band, just that the song has that feel to it. don't get me wrong, i still love the song, but that's not the best representative imo of what they've done |
Let's bring this thread back!
Who is excited about their latest upcoming album "The Incident" out Sept 15th? I tried to get tickets for the show here in Chicago but because of my laziness they were already sold out. Hopefully they come back for a second show like they did last time. |
^ Ooh, I haven't heard about the new album. Has it leaked?
|

I'm checking tour dates now. Fingers crossed for SD. edit: No SD, only LA. Which blows. |
They aren't even coming anywhere close to my neck of the woods. :( Chicago is the closest...and that's almost a days drive. Boo. Anyone who goes (JH, I'm looking at you) must post a review in the concert review thread!

Their first album was awesome space-y rock, and the rest of them are totally not as good.

So... does anyone have a link to the newest album which has apparently leaked?

Thoughts on the new album peeps? |

I got a leaked copy of the album last week and despite it's less than satisfactory sound quality I was able to really enjoy the album. The occasional pops and clicks were no match for the awesomeness that is The Incident. I really hope that Hypocrisy's new album can give The Incident some fair game because I'm set to give it top spot as my Album of the Year.

I don't get it. Maybe it's a grower, but the first listen did absolutely nothing for me. I thought it was bland, boring, and overall completely mediocre and disappointing. The lyrics seemed boring and uninspiring, several were cringe-worthy, and overall the album just didn't seem to flow well at all (random interlude tracks in odd places). Just didn't do anything for me at all.

Though I haven't listened yet due to being overseas etc. I've heard nothing but good things about it though. |

In Absentia has to be their best album. Deadwing their most accesible. And sorry, but FoaBP was completely dissapointing to me.

The first track on it stretches out for too long. Then the 17-minute track was just decent, but there was absolutely no reason for it to be that long. |
'Fear of a Blank Planet' is a cool album. Although I feel they border on self-indulgence a tad too much. Good band as a whole, though. The songwriters have skill.
|
What's the best album to start with for these guys?

Can anyone tell me any Porcupine Tree songs as good as "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here"? This song blows my mind but I haven't found any other PT songs that come remotely close.

Fear of a Blank Planet is by far the best album they have come up with. It melds Porcupine Tree's prog with much more accessibility without losing the passion. Lyrically it is easily their best album. The album flows perfectly and is the perfect length. I don't see how anyone can hate it.
Also, Porcupine Tree does not recycle. They just don't try to completely change themselves every album. He isn't trying to be a creative genius. Wilson wants to keep the music as accessible as the Beatles, which is perfectly fine with me. I am not always in the mood for something that tries too hard to be original aka. what many prog bands do and succeed at. Personally, I thought Steven Wilson's solo album was the most original and the best of any of the Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson projects. |
I thought his solo album was quite average to be honest. His I.E.M work is pretty good but Blackfield are boring as hell.

1) In Absentia 2) The Incident 3) Deadwing Don't get me wrong I love fear of a blank planet I just don't think it is "The most important album of the decade" as it has been hailed by some on progarchives.com |

Also, FOTBP does not have fairly generic subject matter. The lyrics talk about young adult issues, but there is a lot more depth in them. I think what you said is wrong because one could say that Deathspell Omega, a black metal band that writes lyrics about Satan, is fairly generic in terms of its lyrics. However, they are far from the average black metal band and they go much deeper than the typical Satan worship. FOTBP doesn't go extremely deep, but it certainly manages to balance accessibility and depth. |

I still need to give The Incident a few more goes because for some reason I just can't get into it. Maybe it's because I was so wrapped up in the other albums that i expected, I dunno... something more / slightly different? I have the same reaction to Steven Wilsons' Insurgentes album... don't know what it is but I can't seem to be bothered listening to it from start to finish like In Absentia or Deadwing. Later on I will give them both another spin, you never know, I may end up loving them. It's a funny world we live in. |
