Porcupine Tree
good starter album? i downloaded some free mp3s off of http://www.progarchives.com
sounds pretty good so far |
I have Deadwing + some extras. Porcupine Tree has to be the most underated band, they are magicians of the Coldplay meets Pink Floyd kind.

Official Porcupine Tree Thread
Porcupine Tree: My favorite band. Any other fans out there? And those of you who dont know who they are, they are a mostly a prog band. They also have elements of metal experimental and techno in their music. CHECK THEM OUT. They draw influence from Pink Floyd, Tool, Radiohead, The Beach Boys, and many others. If you like any of those bands you will like this one. Trust me. If you are going to buy an album i suggest either In Abstentia or The Sky Moves Sideways. |
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome Band.
|
I love PT. They have such a unique spacey feel to their songs and beautiful harmonies. Steven Wilson is a genius and one of my favorite vocalists. In Absentia is probably my favorite album, followed closely by Deadwing and then Lightbulb Sun.
|
Trains has to be one of my favorite songs of all time. :thumb:
|
I knew Trains would be a classic the moment I heard it, such a beautiful song. It's one of my favorite on In Absentia.
I've been stuck on Lazarus lately. The lyrics are outstanding. |
If I had a dollar for every time "I love Porcupine Tree" ran through my mind, I'd be a gazillionaire.
Amazing band, absolutely amazing. |
I've just now gotten into porcupine tree......Amazing is the only word to say...i just learned Shallow on the guitar....really tight track
|
Les Paul, the whole of Deadwing, the album with Shallow, is insanely good. Check it out.
Steve Wilson is like my hero, an amazing writer and singer. The best thing since Floyd:) |
someone post a link please.. :D
|
|
Just started to get into PT, very very impressed, easy to listen to, great production, voices, harmonies and powerful.
|
Woohoo....check out deadwing...probably my favourite album...that or in absentia
|
I'm going to download In Absentia. I haven't stopped listening to Blackest Eyes and Trains in days. Those two songs kick many an arse.
Favourite song on Deadwing? I'll say Arriving Somewhere But Not Here. |
Ill say...Shallow
|
I haven't heard them but if thier influences are Pink Floyd, Tool, and Radiohead...they must be good. I'll check out In Absentia.
EDIT: Well I listened to In Absentia and I didn't care for it too much. |
PT rule. I love Arriving Somewhere but Not Here. The whole Deadwing and In Absentia records are fantastic.
|
Oh no, not more emo crap!!!
LOL joke times a million. Yeah PT are okay but nothing special for me. My favourite album is probably Deadwing or Stupid Dream. |
Safe Band
Didnt Know They Were British |
wtf do you mean by safe?
|
Porcupine Tree Recommendations
I would like some recommendations for a good PT album. I already have Deadwing, and In Absentia and I love them. So shoot.
|
Futile EP and Signify are good
|
Up the Downstairs and Warzsawa are the other two I have.....both pretty good.
|
They're all brilliant honestly, and choosing one over the other is near impossible as they all give off a good amount of atmosphere in different ways. Though if I had to recommend just one, Signify probably would be it.

The Offfiial Porcupine Tree Thread
 to them. Very diverse musically with vatchy pop tunes like Lazarus, or a mix of metal and prog like Deadwing. Deadwing is by far their best album by the way. Thoughts?
|
Oh man, this is going to get messy.
|
Hey, it's better than your thread. :stupid:

Either way... let's start the ball rolling. What are everyone's thoughts on the new album? Personally I love it and it is one of my favourite PT albums ever. |
There third best I think.

Good threads don't inspire flaming and huge off-topic discussions. The worst part of the band is ho the singer sounds slightly like Chris Martin. Which is a bad thing by the way.
|
I always thought Steven Wilson had a bit of a sterile voice... I like it though.
|
The new album is brilliant.
|
Very Good. I havent listened to them nearly enough lately but used to a lot.

Yep.

It's shameful that until just over a year ago, I had never heard of them and I'm British. It just goes to show the state of music in this country. If it's not RnB or Indie, nothing get's a mention. Considering that they have been going for a long time-over 15 years just proves that Rock really is the greatest music in the world, very few artists outside of this genre achieve longevity.
My introduction was DEADWING, and the track ARRIVING SOMEWHERE BUT NOT HERE is one brilliant track. |

My view is that this is one of the very worst bands to come out of British music over the past 18 years. They were originally a COMPLETE Pink Floyd rip off, and there is virtually nothing interesting, new or original in the majority of their catalogue at all - it just sounds like bog standard 70s prog: the turmoil where a lot of prog unfortunately ended up towards the end of the classic prog era. I do NOT understand why this band have such a following and I completely fail to see their merits. If somebody would like to take on the task of clearly and effectively explaining just what this band have done that is of any particular substantial merit at all, I would be very happy to read it.
