Wait, I forgot about Jethro Tull. I've heard Aqualung(album, not just song) quite a lot in my youth.

Hah, I also heard a bit of Jethro Tull, including Thick as a Brick while knowing what prog was .. so actually, that precedes my previous Tarkus story by some years.

Thick as a Brick is great but I didn't like Pt. 2 that much

probably the hardest-hitting prog for me is Relayer by Yes - it's delirious

My dad listened to a lot of Yes and Supertramp when I was young. I remember Fragile and Breakfast in America playing quite often in the background of my youth.

I suppose I listened to a little bit of Pink Floyd, but really just thought of it as classic rock at the time when I was in late middle school / early high school.

A little bit after Pink Floyd, I discovered Porcupine Tree's album In Abstentia, after falling in love with the song "Gravity Eyelids" when an older cousin was listening to it.

So this was probably my first real prog experience. It really blew my mind, to be quite honest. There was so much going on, and it was all so perfectly put together. Many a night, I would go to sleep listening to Porcupine Tree.

listening to Thick as a Brick now actually, does get a bit wordy - wish there were longer instrumental passages

My first prog experience is not as interesting. I used to listen to a lot of Pink Floyd when I was a kid in elementary school, like ages 7-8-9-10ish. The Wall was actually my favourite record back then, but I later discovered Dark Side of the Moon and then Animals.

The first prog epic I can remember checking out with the intention of exploring something called "prog rock" was actually ELP's Tarkus. I didn't fall in love with it immediately, but something about it piqued my interest and after coming back to it a couple of times more, it really started to grow on me. I still think Tarkus (the song) is brilliant!

Yes was my first introduction to prog but ELP was my next experience and Tarkus is just an amazing epic track. Sure it's overkill, flamboyant and pompous but that's what ELP is all about. Thier s/t debut is brilliant as well IMO.

@ Phanastasio : that`s a masterful track from a band I`ve never heard of before.Thanks. The guy`s got a great voice, and I love how the music shifts so easily, from delicate to flat-out and back again.

@ Chumley : have you read Dotoar`s review of ELP`s first album ? You`d probably find it interesting, so here`s a link in case you haven`t come across it yet:

You`re welcome ! Thanks for commenting on the Cross-Collateral thread - I`ll be checking out their first album, on your recommendation.
