My first prog experience... My eldest sister bought me a Pink Floyd CD when I was really young (It was actually my first CD). It was "Dark Side of the Moon". Honestly, it was too far out for someone my age to appreciate, but the song "Money" was an earworm of mine for years to come (Though not as much as Barrett Strong's song by the same name would become).

Sitting around doing bong hits in the 80s listening to Iron Maiden - Killers
My friend switched the lp to YES - Fragile... I was really stoned at the time and It out right blow my mind. I was instantly hooked.

My dad watching Pink Floyd The Wall when I was like 8. I was sold on "we don't need no education."

Ironically, here I am, 26 years later, pursuing a PhD.

Floyd- Piper at the Gates of Dawn- at boarding school we had our own tiny studies which we decorated with posters of Granny Takes a Trip etc ( This was 1968/9- we were all intent on buying the new stereo systems coming out for fifty quid- I put Piper on and never returned.

Ever since I was 5, I would play records on my dad’s turntable. I don’t remember which album or song I heard first, but here are some that made an impression on me:

- Alman Brother’s Band - Whipping Post

- Yes - Fragile

- Pink Floyd - Time

- Jethro Tull - Aqualung

- Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue

And later in my teens I was introduced to bands that my dad did not have any records from:

-Rush - Moving Pictures, Signals

- Genesis - Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound

I don't even think I realized I was listening to prog the first time, but I was digging Black Sabbath back in high school, especially the later albums like Sabotage and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. I also fell in love with a band called Mystique and their EPs Black Rider and I am the King around that same time and realized much later that those were probably my first experiences with prog. I used to smoke a lot of weed back then (now not at all) and it was like going on a musical journey.

A few weeks later, a friend of mine starts to mention him, and I sort of knew what he was talking about because I had heard the name before. Without any question or anything, he lent me a DVD and the "Systematic Chaos" CD to listen to. Needless to say, as soon as I heard the end of "In The Presence of Enemies Part 1", I just couldn't help but listen to the rest. And I am happy I did, that album is full of amazing prog energy, it just led me to dive into more Dream Theater and expand my prog library. And now today, it's one of the main genres I listen to.
I saw Dream Theater in concert as part of the Gigantour in 2005, had never heard of them before but my uncle was a big fan, and now so am I.
