Favourite Rush Albums ?

It' hard !

IvanMC 08-30-2013 01:06 AM

I'll go with a classic: "Moving Pictures". It's just flawless.

Big Ears 09-21-2013 08:39 AM

2112, but Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings come close.

IvanMC 09-21-2013 09:33 AM

Wish I could see them play live here!

+1 Moving Pictures

the_pants 03-10-2014 04:51 PM

Just getting into Rush. I LOVE the first album and now I have 2112 so I'll see how that goes, it seems to be considered one of their best.

The first album is an oddity in that its their only pure hard rock release of the 1970s and it's really just an average album, their second Fly By Night is an improvement over it and the best of their very early period. Caress of Steel despite the great name and its metal sounding name is a load of toss! 2112 though is a genuine epic and from there the band legend started to be born. This is just my opinion of course, but then again these forums are built on opinions.:D

I agree with this except that I at least liked Bastille Day off CoS. My favorite Rush would be A Farewell to Permanent Moving Hemispheric Signals.

2112 is sounding pretty awesome, I think I'll need to listen to it about 20 times before I get my head around it!

Paul Smeenus, I tip my hat to your awesomely wonderful name. Good job.

SATCHMO 03-11-2014 10:01 PM

Hemispheres, for sure, followed by Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Caress of Steel

Carpe Mortem 03-12-2014 12:14 PM

Is there any way we can get a poll going with this? I've only caught a few Rush tracks (love the song Tom Sawyer) and don't know which album I should start with. I guess I'd be going for whatever has either the heaviest, or the most psychadelic sound.

I agree on Bastille Day but I also like Lakeside Park.

If you like Tom Sawyer then definitely buy Moving Pictures. It has their other big hit Limelight and some other very tasty offerings.

I'd also recommend Exit Stage Left, its a live album that encompasses some of the better Rush songs throughout the years.

Might I suggest coming into http://plug.dj/musicbanter/

It's a chatroom where everybody gets a chance to play a song in turn. It's a lot of fun and if you're in with me I could play some Rush stuff to see if you'd like it, plus you might hip me to some new stuff too. A lot of us hang out there, usually in the evenings (stateside)

Neat! I'm on there right now, room appears to be empty.

It's always a pleasure to discuss the music of Rush! I'll pick five favorites:

5. '2112' * ( Unquestionably when Rush truly became RUSH)!

4. 'Rush' ( For no other reason except they NEVER sounded like that again).

3. 'Permanent Waves' ( Arguably the ONLY Rush album that had a "happy medium" with early fans as well as new fans who appreciated where their "new" sound was headed. In short order, LESS can be MORE! This album is the proof).

2. 'Power Windows' ( Great songs, great production, and great songwriting! Perhaps Neil Peart's best lyrical content EVER, and that's really saying something! CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. If my #1 pick hadn't been created, 'Power Windows' would arguably be the greatest Rush album ever recorded ).

1. 'Moving Pictures' ( Yes, this remains their biggest selling album to this day, but there's a reason for that. All killer, NO filler! If we're being honest, a band or artist's biggest seller ISN'T always their best. 'Moving Pictures' is a RARE exception to the rule. A true work of excellence ).

* 'Signals' comes DAMN CLOSE to '2112' though! But I digress. :D

k3no 07-08-2014 05:08 PM

Nothing beats Moving Pictures... Except maybe 2112... Except maybe Fly By Night...

ArthurReviews 10-24-2015 03:27 PM

Definetly favour 2112!

axstar713 10-24-2015 06:16 PM

I can't narrow it down to one, I'll go with Hemispheres, A Farewell To Kings, and Caress Of Steel. Caress Of Steel is one that has grown on me over the years although I do have some great memories of listening to it back in high school - you've got Bastille Day, Lakeside Park,The Fountain of Lamneth and The Necromancer. The Necromancer pt 3 The Return of the Prince - my favorite solo by Alex, hands down. Such a great, great band.

Neapolitan 10-24-2015 08:18 PM

Moving Pictures
  1. Tom Sawyer
  2. Red Barchetta
  3. YYZ
  4. Limelight
  5. The Camera Eye
  6. Witch Hunt (Part III Of 'Fear')
  7. Vital Signs

Hypocrisy 10-27-2015 12:46 PM

Fly By Night , Caress of Steel , 2112 . All the Worlds a Stage ,Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings. Love their 70s era.

Kingsc23 12-06-2015 02:13 PM

Moving Picture is probably my favorite as well. I love Yyz.

PsychoRic 01-20-2016 06:21 PM

Almost impossible choice... But my favorite one is A Farewell To Kings... Come on... "Cygnus X-1, Book I: The Voyage"!!!!

JGuy Grungeman 01-22-2016 02:05 PM

Permanent Waves.

SatoshiNak 01-22-2016 06:09 PM

I'm a big fan of the old stuff, mainly the 70's era but up to and including Moving Pictures, maybe even Signals. It is really hard to pick one favorite, it'd be between Hemispheres and A Farewell To Kings I guess.

SuperSymmetry 01-22-2016 06:39 PM

I liked Clockwork Angels the most out of all of them, in all honesty.

Chula Vista 01-22-2016 06:40 PM

Caress of Steel
Permanent Waves
Power Windows
Clockwork Angels

And pretty much all of the others. Been spinning and enjoying Grace Under Pressure a lot lately.

Mondo Bungle 01-22-2016 08:48 PM

Caress of Steel before anything x1000 then eventually a number two spot with A Farewell to Kings

AYE you all get it! Caress of Steel is crazy underrated and by far my favorite of their output.

Chula Vista 01-22-2016 10:38 PM

My old band use to open our shows with Bastille Day. Crowds ate it up cause they didn't know it, but it ****ing rocked so damn hard.

That album is criminally underrated. One of their best imo.

Frownland 01-23-2016 08:44 AM

2112 for me. It wasn't always my favourite because of the inconsistency, but when I saw them perform the title track, it was the pinnacle of the show (yes, even better than Peart's big solo) and it earned its place in my heart.

To this day that's my problem with 2112. The first half is amazing, but after that I just don't care about hearing the rest of the album.

Paul Smeenus 01-23-2016 09:21 AM

I do like "Bastille Day" from CoS but I'm sorry "The Necromancer" is a pretty feeble offering for the big centerpiece opus IMO.

Mondo Bungle 01-23-2016 02:12 PM

Necromancer is one of my all time favorite songs
