Perhaps a Tony Hawk skateboarding game is a better analogy then. No real difference there.

To me they're completely different. If you genuinely have an interest in music, you're not going to settle for playing along to songs on your TV. Also you can't deny that guitar hero drums can't instill some basic rhythm and familiarization of physical technique (I'm at loss for a better term here).

Skateboarding requires energy, instruments don't.

Let's say Fifa the football game, I play that but I don't play real football anymore. That isn't bad because I'm never gonna become a footballer, it's just a video game that passes the time. A lot of people do both, play the video game and play in real life.

Violent & Funky has a genuine interest in music but doesn't play an instrument, yet he plays GH... I think the same applies to a lot of people.

Well, I tried to pick up the bass last year and my hands sweat too much to pluck the strings haha.

But I got my GH bundle for $100, which included the drums and all that jazz. I have no musical background, so it would be way too much effort to try and teach it to myself. With everything else going on I just don't have time for it, and playing GH with my friends is a fun way to get involved with some of our favorite music...

I always felt like the birth of GH is stopping people forming bands. Why bother going through the effort of learning instruments when you can invite a few of your mates around, have a few beers and play Guitar Hero?

I do see the appeal come to think of it, I just think it's a bad thing. $100, you could probably get a nice Les Paul for about $120

If Guitar Hero is keeping anyone from forming a band then I'm glad the band didn't get formed haha...

You're still physically training your body articulation while playing guitar and opening mental pathways. Energy is put into both whether or not it's as physically demanding as the other.

I'm not talking about an interest in music generally (i.e. listening). I'm talking about the instrument aspect (guitar hero vs. a real guitar). Not quite the same thing.

Ya, like, I'm a huge baseball fan but no one is complaining about me playing fantasy baseball instead of going out and coaching my own little league team...

I feel like there's a difference. If you're interested in sports you play the video game and compete, if you're interested in playing music you play a real guitar. GH can get in the way of that if you don't have the motivation or whatever.

People who learn instruments aren't necessarily interesting in the instrument itself, they are just people who are listeners and they want to know HOW the sounds they're hearing are happening.. so they begin to learn. Some people might be curious in how the sounds they're hearing are happening, but not so curious they're willing to learn so GH offers a nice easy alternative.

To me they're both just games. If you're interested in playing a real guitar I don't think a games really going to get in the way of that. Opinion, whatever.

You kind of make it sound like when I say interested, I'm talking about the mechanics of the instrument. If they're curious about how the sound is made they're still taking an interest in the instrument. Even so, I'm talking about the playing aspect not just 'investigating sound sources'.

Maybe it depends on the person, I believe that for most it will be a nice easy alternative pressing a few buttons on a piece of plastic. For others it might be a gateway into playing a real instrument..

I've always felt like GH prevents people from learning, mainly 'cause of people I know. They like and listen to music etc. but they can't play a real instrument but they're excellent on Guitar Hero..
