Perhaps a Tony Hawk skateboarding game is a better analogy then. No real difference there.

To me they're completely different. If you genuinely have an interest in music, you're not going to settle for playing along to songs on your TV. Also you can't deny that guitar hero drums can't instill some basic rhythm and familiarization of physical technique (I'm at loss for a better term here).
