punks dress in what they want to dress in...isnt that the whole idea behind punk??? (maybe it was..but isnt any more...i dont know.)

I think alot of you are missing what his post was, its for a project in the fashion changes of punk. You go from this;

It's just dependable (like most things in fashion) on the way you go about it.
But seeing as we're talking about the mainstream I think you should focus on the availability of punk clothing and the manufacturing of it.
Back then you would most likely have to go to a gig to get band shirts, tear up some jeans and improvise. There was a bit more creativity and you had to search around more.
Now you can just go to hot topic, or go on interpunkcom , buy some 80% polyester tartan trousers, and suddenly you consider yourself to have a style influenced by punk music.

Along those lines.

Crowquill's post illustrates the difference between the 70's to the present day.
Punks in the 70's dressed to shock, that was the point. There weren't any rules, it was a case of anything goes. Whatever did the trick.
Eventually people copied from bands like the Pistols, until the whole thing about being punk (as far as dress styles were concerned) lost the initial point.
Ha, I remember when my eldest sister brought home a 'punk', all he was wearing was a scruffy t-shirt, a pair of red skin-tight canvas jeans and doc martin boots. Oh, and he had spikey hair.
Not very menacing admittedly, but back then, a pair of red jeans was shocking enough.

Haha, as an example...check out the knotted handkerchief on his head.
Can't imagine Fenix wearing that now.
