Reading "Straight to Hell" at the top of Screen13's link (and reflecting on the fact that Jackhammer started this thread citing that track) reminds me that I should really have included it on my list, too.

I first heard them play it when I was maybe 14 or 15 when they appeared on Saturday Night Live. It was "punk" enough for me (but somehow "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" was) so, at the time, I didn't like it. Frankly, I didn't like any of their slower songs.

Then as my interest in The Clash grew, I was turned off by Combat Rock - totally unfairly, as it turns out.

About a year ago, I downloaded Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg and heard the longer version of "Straight to Hell" (I'd never listened to On Broadway) and realized "holy cats, this song is amazing."

So, yeah, add "Straight to Hell" to my list. Powerful lyrics, amazing music and one of Strummer's best vocals.

1. Complete Control
2. White Man
3. Death Or Glory
4. London Calling
5. Clampdown

Spanish Bombs probably, although almost everything on that album is gold.

Outside of London Calling, I like Police and Thieves and White Man (In Hammersmith Palais). I really dig a sick bassline.

kylebartlein 01-23-2011 03:38 PM

Rudie Can't Fail
London Calling
Guns of Brixton
Clamp Down

Alfred 01-23-2011 03:47 PM

My favorite song of theirs is Straight To Hell, second being Stay Free, third being Somebody Got Murdered. Stay Free is such an underrated tune.

DreamingOfAlbion 03-06-2011 07:17 PM

Such a tough question! They're the band that got me into music in the first place. I spent like a year listening to nothing but the Clash. Anyway, my favorite at the moment is Guns of Brixton. London Calling and Train in Vain are also great. I particularly love the lyrics of Lost In The Supermarket. White Riot and White Man in Hammersmith Palais are also amazing. Ooh, plus Straight to Hell and Stay Free. Ok, I'll stop now before I list every song they ever made.

guttetrance 03-09-2011 01:48 AM

My favorite song of theirs is London Calling for sure.

Howard the Duck 03-09-2011 07:22 AM

When Ivan Meets G.I. Joe
Career Opportunities
Janie Jones
Guns of Brixton
Clash City Rockers

Raust 03-09-2011 07:53 AM

Bankrobber, really dig the chill reggae esque theme that goes with it. Something bold that The Clash did and it still stays true to there style.

Sansa Stark 03-09-2011 01:04 PM

Of all their "reggae esque" you pick Bankrobber?!

Hey I like the song okay! You may not like it that's fine, but I do. And yes, I suppose I do like it out "of all their reggae esque" songs.
:finger::finger::finger:

Sansa Stark 03-10-2011 10:06 AM

have you heard all their albums?

Raust 03-10-2011 10:13 AM

Derp, i've heard most. I have yet to listen to Combat Rock and Cut the Crap. You wanna point out on what I'm missing hahahaha.

Sansa Stark 03-10-2011 10:28 AM

Yeah, manners

Raust 03-10-2011 11:05 AM

I doubt that one comes up very often. I can hear it clear as bell in my head though so it must be catchy.

Really? Wow. I'm a big Clash fan but I can't stand that song. It's the only song on London Calling I skip.

Odyshape 03-14-2011 06:10 PM

I didn't know this existed until recently reading this thread. I think it may be my favorite song ever my god is it good I can listen to over and over and ovvvveerrrr. I don't know why this was only on the american version of their debut.

Because it was released as a single a year after the album had come out in the UK.

The Clash's debut album didn't come out in the US until 1979.

Odyshape 03-14-2011 06:48 PM

Oh neat thanks for the info Ahhhhh Its soooooo catchy

The Music Gates 03-17-2011 10:21 AM

Should I stay should I go..

Well..it may not be their best..but it still makes me tp get up and dance..

stephen1181 03-26-2011 02:05 PM

For me "Lost in the Supermarket" seems to connect with what I'm going through right now, and just always felt like this song really defined the band. I think they knew what direction they wanted to go, but did they finally get there?

UnionThug 03-26-2011 05:56 PM

So hard to choose, but "Rudie Can't Fail" is probably my fav.

Belly19 03-27-2011 03:41 AM

Bank Robber

I saw the Bosstones play this song once, and man it was great.

Howell 03-31-2011 03:56 AM

It has to be the White Man In Hammersmith Palais for me but recently I haven't been able to get Spanish Bombs out of my head.. but all Clash songs are my faves partciulary the earlier ones on Give 'Em Enough Rope and their first album.... BACK IN THE GARAGGEEEE!!

FRED HALE SR. 04-04-2011 12:24 PM

Police and Thieves- Early reggae influence on this one makes for some good listening.

Stephen 04-04-2011 06:37 PM

Not sure about a favourite. I'd say London Calling was really their stand out album. I like a few tracks off that like Clampdown, Guns of Brixton, Lost in the Supermarket, I'm Not Down.

I don't recall comparing them or saying the Clash version was better. I like both versions myself.

stillunusual 04-05-2011 10:22 AM

not sure about "Police & Thieves" but I love their version of "Armagideon Time"....

Howard the Duck 04-05-2011 10:16 PM

my fave Clash cover is Pressure Drop - that's just mostly because it's fairly close to Toots' original

The Virgin 04-05-2011 10:50 PM

i'm not exactly sure what a clash track means but imma give it a try, i pick "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy and Monica

Howard the Duck 04-05-2011 11:05 PM
