DARK DARK post-punk/goth/noiserock/nowave

recommend me some of this. Recently, I've been enjoying welling in a pit of depression and want some bleak music to listen to while I'm pseudo-enraged at the world.

Not really, I just love this sh.it.

I love:

The Birthday Party - ahh their lyrics, the killer guitar tearing a whole in your skull, Cave's vocals. Brilliant.

The Cure - the early stuff is just a Gang of Four ripoff, but not too bad. Thru the 80s, though they released some stuff I am really lovin' just now. Pornography, especially.

Cabaret Voltaire - WOW! I wrote them off when I first heard them but I revisited Red Mecca and it's so intense and dark. Related to industrial bands in some way, who tf knows.

Swans - sludgy, aggressive, dark, nihilistic, bleak, passionate and just ****in' excellent! Cop and Children of God are my 2 favorites.

Bauhaus - like C.V, I didn't particularly care for them at first but listening to In The Flat Field about 10 times recently has convinced me they are in fact INCREDIBLE. The guitar work is what I love most, it's really scratchy and wild at times.

Joy Division - Love them so much. I couldn't pick a favourite album because I genuinely love it all. They're THE essential post-punk band, and watching Control recently has got me (obsessively) back into them.

Sonic Youth - BAD MOON RISING. That album is really bleak and dark, as is some of Confusion is Sex and Evol. 80s Sonic Youth rules all.

No-Wave bands - DNA especially. DNA are unbelievably good! Everything related to no-wave that I've heard I've enjoyed a lot, except for Lydia Lunch solo. That was ****.

Earth - I'm not really familiar with this type of music, but I was listening to one of their albums in bed and it was a pretty amazing listen. Need more bands like this.

Codeine - not similar to anything above mentioned, but they play VERY slow, with chiming guitars that sometimes get loud but mostly stay quiet and drony. Half spoken, half sung vocals. Theres something charming about the vocals, that and the interesting guitar lines keep me coming back. It gets tagged as "slowcore" music - read from that what you will. Theyre a good band to get high to. One of the members was in June of 44.

---------------

what's the point in this thread?

I'm looking for music similar to the above mentioned. I've burnt my way through most of those bands discographies, so I'm on the lookout for some new stuff. Mostly i'm looking for music with the bleak, hopeless atmosphere that some of these bands portray. It doesn't necessarily need to be sonically similar, ie they don't need to be post-punk bands. Anything with interesting composition will do. It can even be "classic rock"..but I'd rather it wasn't that.

also just discuss if you like those bands or not. And what do you guys thing of Control, the biopic about Ian Curtis? And how's the weather where you are? Anything. It's not like the punk forum has been that active or good for ages, eh?

laterz

You might like Skinny Puppy.

can_i_say 11-07-2007 01:29 AM

Flipper and Husker Du

Zer0 11-07-2007 04:43 AM

Sisters of Mercy. They are essential 80's goth. Get Floodlands its such a bleak album

I know both of them very well, but good suggestions. Flipper is exactly the sort of thing I'm after. If you like Flipper I suggest checking out No Trend, btw. No Trend are like a more brutal Flipper, they're excellent.

Ahh yeah, I'll definitely get that. Heard a lot about them but still haven't heard 'em.

thanks guys.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-07-2007 11:09 AM

Gomm - Bit like Wire + Can

Dome - While we're on the subject of Wire two ex members of Wire. Bit like Wire but more electronic.

Blurt - Post punk with saxophones & African rhythms

Lard - Jello Biafra + Al Jourgenson

Lemon Kittens - If your a fan of stuff like Nurse With Wound

Sacharine Trust - The next step up from Husker Du , think Hardcore & Jazz

And if you've not heard it already get Shotgun Wedding , the album Lydia Lunch did with Roland S Howard of the Birthday Party.

White Lies 11-07-2007 11:42 AM

I'm familiar with Saccharine Trust, I love them.

The rest is all new to me, man. Thanks very much. I have to say, Gomm in particular intrigue me. Wire and Can are two of my favs, so that can't be bad. I'll be searching for those tonight.

cheers

Sound Devastation 11-07-2007 01:03 PM

The Angelic Process... Swans are a major influence.

right-track 11-07-2007 01:32 PM

You could always give the Bauhaus spin offs a listen.
Peter Murphy and Japan's bassist Mick Karn did an album together under the band name Dali's Car. Worth checking out if nothing else, with this album.

Tones On Tail - 'Pop' is an interesting album and anything by Love & Rockets.

If you like Joy Division try Section 25 and The Sound.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 11-07-2007 04:26 PM

Lard is dope.

cardboard adolescent 11-07-2007 08:26 PM

I don't know these, I'll check them out. I know Nurse with Wound collaborated with Faust, so they shold be interesting.

I like the rest of those bands (esp Swell Maps, This Heat and the Pop Group), with the exception of Whitehouse and Devo. Devo always annoyed me, but I haven't listened to them for about 2 years and a lot has changed in that time. I'll give them another go. Whitehouse were just plain irritating to me. It's power electronics though, I hear that's the point.

I have heard Allegory & Self by Psychic TV and I like it a lot, but that's a pretty upbeat album to my ears! I hear their earlier albums are much darker and weirder though.

lots of suggestions guys, thanks a lot. I'm listening to a Skinny Puppy album just now, and it was pretty great.

cardboard adolescent 11-08-2007 09:46 PM

Allegory & Self still has plenty of dark tracks, Southern Comfort for instance.

Dead World.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 11-10-2007 06:09 PM

Missed the "noise rock" part.

Check out AIDS Wolf, as well.

A few here I don't know. Nice list.

Wayfarer 11-11-2007 12:29 PM

Glenn Branca.

White Lies 11-11-2007 04:42 PM

I have The Ascension and Symphony No. 1 by Branca, and both of them are fantastic. Marginally prefer Symphony 1, but it's all good stuff.

Jackhammer and Stu, those are all new names to me..cheers guys.

do any of you use soulseek? I can't find ANYTHING by any of the bandz I've searched for thus far. nothing by Gomm, no Section 25, no Angelic Process, no NWW. The sharing threads have disappeared since I last came to this forum, and it seems uploading is now no longer permitted. Understandable given Oink and whatnot, but it sux.

White Lies 11-11-2007 04:44 PM

ps..I love Skinny Puppy. I got Vivisect VI, and it's rad. Thanks to Starving Artless for that.

Fields of The Nephilim are a seriously underated band and a highly influential band. Go to youtube to check stuff out.

I'm on slsk, leviathan1313sb i believe is my handle.

O'Bannion 11-12-2007 03:49 PM

Swans are pretty much boss if you ask me. Skinny Puppy rules too.

Zer0 11-14-2007 04:01 AM

If you like industrial stuff i recommend Front Line Assembly, they combine dark electronica and rock perfectly.
If you want more dark post-punk/goth try The Virgin Prunes

Skinfeast 11-30-2007 01:11 PM

Bands like EARTH:

Zero Ohms (extremely mellow)
Jesu (With Justin Broadrick from Godflesh)
OM
The Melvins (Joe Preston from the Melvins was also in Earth)
Zozobra
Eyehategod
Sunn 0))) (Closely associated with Earth)

Check out bands on Southern Lord records. You will like a lot of what you see, if you are into Earth.

Music_Rocker 12-02-2007 09:11 AM

Some of these might not be considered in this cateogory but they all played great music in the early 90's:

Catherine Wheel
Dinosaur Jr.
King's X
The Lemonheads
The The

Mr Nic 12-04-2007 08:03 AM

From a more dark goth perspective:

Xmal Deutchland
March Violets
Ghost Dance
The Rose of Avalanche
Salvation / James Ray

From a noise perspective:

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Loop - any of their early stuff
Lydia Lunch

From a hardcore(esque) perspective:
Minutemen
Amphetamine Reptile stuff (Cows / Dwarves / Helios Creed etc.)

Gates_of_Iscariot 12-09-2007 06:28 PM

genocide organ

Have you heard The Greater Wrong of the Right? That album rules all.

I like Fields of the Nephilim, as well as Bauhaus and some Siouxsie and the Banshees. I've been meaning to check out Cinema Strange and other goth rock.

As for drone, surprisingly I've never listened to that much of it, despite being into a lot of doom metal. The last drone I listened to and liked was Khanate. I don't know if they're like Earth. A mate recommended Hyatari to me.

O'Bannion 12-15-2007 12:16 PM

OH MY GOD, I love Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Sneer 01-20-2009 09:27 PM

I love this thread. Does anybody have Red Mecca, Cop/Young God or any Skinny Puppy?

can_i_say 01-21-2009 03:39 AM

I think Manic Street Preachers deserves a mention here; The Holy Bible is one of the most dark-aggressive post-punk albums available. Also, Gold Against The Soul has a pretty bleak vibe to it, although in more of a post-grunge/arena style.

I have got 'Too Dark Park' by Skinny Puppy, it's just insanely violent, macabre industrial. It's a shame you can never hear the lyrics but they are all conscious pro-animal rights/environmental rants apparently, I am a fan of that album.

I really dig the coldwave music that came out of Europe, like the dark side of the new wave era, bands like Siekiera, Kas Product etc. But I have rarely been moved to want to hear entire albums by any of these groups. If anybody has any recommendations I am all ears :hphones:

There's a brilliant compilation I'd advise anyone to seek out titled So Young But So Cold: Underground French Music 1977-1983, it's more synth/electro but it fits the description of this thread

jackhammer 01-23-2009 12:37 PM

Black Tape For A Blue Girl:

Seriously good stuff.

Great album. That and Last Rights are my two favorites by Skinny Puppy. The two of them could almost work as a double album together.

jackhammer 01-23-2009 01:01 PM

I need some Skinny Puppy. I have some promos directed by Jim Van Bebber on a DVD but that's it.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-23-2009 03:46 PM

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l99/urbanH/94312.jpg

Was listening to this album before.
Phew is basically a Japanese solo artist by the name of Hiromi Moritani.

If you want to know what her music sounds like basically imagine Siouxsie Sioux doing an impression of Bjork while Can play in the background. In fact Holger Czukay & Jaki Liebezeit were members of her band at one time.
A couple of the tracks almost sound a bit like Radiohead's Kid A era , which isn't bad to say this came out 19 years earlier.

I don't know that much more about her. This is her self tited debut from 1981 , I know she released 3 more albums (1987 , 1992 & 1995) But i've not heard anything since.
