Did the f*cking rotter incident "make" punk?
The imfamous line uttered by Steve Jones, "What a f*cking rotter" effectivly ended the interviewer's career, and brought punk rock into the lime light.
My question is, had Jones not said that, would Punk (and the Sex Pistols) been so popular? |
Eventually it had to happen. I don't think a single line from a single interview started an entire movement.....
|
Well, the interviewer who got fired for that interview was well known, so it's possible (in my mind atleast) that the Pistols were brought to the public's eye by this.
|
There were much more profanities said before he said fucking rotter, so nothing would've been really different if he didn't say fucking rotter. The interviewer also didn't get fired, just suspended for a few weeks.

He was suspended , bought back & then the show was axed 6 weeks later. |
The interviewer was Bill Grundy who was a famed alcoholic. The Pistols were plied with drink all afternoon in order to get an "interesting" interview but it backfired when Jones started swearing. Any interviewer worth his weight would have cut the interview there and then, but Grundy goaded them on asking them for more "naughty words".....the rest is history.

Yes people swore before Rotten and yes there were bands that played instruments before that sounded punkish but lets just accept this forum would not have a punk section had it not been for the pistols. Just as it doesn't have a skiffle section. Wake up and smell the coffee for the love of God. |
What on earth are you talking about
|

Someone is certainly passionate.

Like you make out he was ticked off and he came back with a game show for old ladies on Grampian Tele six months later. It ruined his career and he deserved it for trying to ridicule young blokes by comparing them to Motzart. You make it sound like he was presenting Mr and Mrs the following autumn. That show started punk and got all the squares protesting outside halls and got it all over the media. That kick started the revolution from crappy rick wakemen prog rock to music with balls and the world changed. (not including the floyd in prog rock bashing.) Have you had your coffee! |
What the fuck are you talking about?
|
Don't know

And he did work again , on several things actually like 'What the papers say' which was one of BBC2's top rated news programmes. |

Man you guy's are sharp!
Do you have music pedia's on your laps!! ha ha ha. But he never lived it down. I suppose people here just don't like credit where credit is due. They always want to point to some obscure act who predates the explosion. But that is silly as people are asking who really made it happen? Otherwise we can just go back to cavemen. Do you see? A lot of the acts mentioned only existed because of the explosion made by the remark or band in question and therefore we know of them now. There is no right or wrong but just in peoples minds they know this was the moment that things were kickstarted and things exploded. That is what people are asking in their thread titles. |
Yeah but it was a long time ago , we've moved on
|
I haven't!!
I'm still at the silver jubilee ah ha ha |
^ What a f*cking rotter.

Gottcha. Confusing :)
|
are you geeks who try to ban people from the forum as you can't handle a bit of criticism?
Take it on the chin man. Otherwise you appear like geeks. This blokes making music and you just slag it off from your living room computer or whatever. You couldn't kill me believe!!! |

The majority of posters here don't. |
You haven't even heard his band or songs have you?
He isn't putting in links or anything just mentioning it in passing. If his band cracked the music world you'd probably be claiming you know all about his band. Let it be man. |

Any other moans while i'm here? |
You make good points Urban!
Look at oasis best song!!! You do make good points. You have to agree with some of mine though. I do have a valid case about Maclaren and the who and women in rock. I mean you named about 8 women which is a pretty poor show for half the world isn't it? People don't always like the truth but it is the truth all the same. Mark E Smith has a different band each week!!! Can he still talk or has the drink finally ended that poetic souls work for good! |
