Fugazi
I heard Fugazi was emo from another webforum site, and I figured i'd ask the 'experts' :p:
So would you consider Fugazi emo? |
well I'm no expert but I don't think they are emo. I forgot what most people classify them as...was it post hardcore?
id call it damn good music myself...
ah me too!
shame on me for taking this to them emo forum :bonkhead: haha jk |

fugazi: not emo, although the band was composed of former emo band members... if that makes any sense...
Fugazi- More emo than taking back sunday
which wave of emo are we talking about?
i don't know anything about emo, i couldn't tell you, all i know is i heard they were emo on another forum site.
bump.
...they are emo but its been a while since these people posted so i dont think its relevant. they kick major ass is all that really matters. |
They do kick ass
I saw them in a high school gym many years ago |

arent they like post punk or something?
post hardcore i'd say.
fugazi are amazing, and they consistantly put out great albums. Brendan Canty is one of my favorite drummers. |
I only have "Repeater" and "The Argument" but they are two of my favorite albums. I wouldn't consider them emo though.
the only song I ever really liked from them was "Waiting Room"
I find most people who don't like them think the vocals are too harsh or obnoxious, and the cure for this is to give them "The Argument."
I love their earlier albums for the guitar work, but The Argument seems to have the best atmosphere and individual songs to me. |
end hits
Their 'Margin Walker' E.P is phenomenal. In fact I still have it on cassette :)

Which do you prefer?
Fugazi or Minor Threat?
Fugazi. I don't care for Minor Threat at all.
Fugazi for me but to be honest i dont know that much Minor Threat.
Thread merged as it doesn't really warrant a seperate thread especially with such a scant original post. Minor Threat don't do a lot for me either so Fugazi all the way.
Minor Threat are ok for the occasional listen, but Fugazi is good for frequent listens.
I wouldnt have ever thought anyone would classify Fugazi as emo. They may have continued to progress the straight edge scene after Minor Threat, which I wholeheartedly disagree with, but that doesnt make them emo.they make good tunes, thats all that matters.
Minor Threat for me, one of hardcore's best.
man i'm getting into this band more and more. i don't know what took me so long, i've had a few LPs for ages.
Red Medicine is my favorite so far but that's bound to change. excellent stuff. |
Fugazi is awesome. :thumb:
Definitely Fugazi... Minor Threat...meh
I started with Minor Threat and still love them but I enjoy Fugazi much much more.
id say fugazi is just punk fused reggae experimentalism
Fugazi is awesome.
I'd say that Repeater is probably their best, although The Argument is a major contender. They really don't have what I would call a bad album though. |

Although bardonodude's description doesn't make any less sense to me than the 'emo' one. |
I would really say they're hardcore with a pinch of post-rock. So many bands got retroactively dubbed emo that really didn't deserve to have that title thrown at them. Someone told me once that Dag Nasty and The Descendents were the godfathers of Emo, and I was like "Fuck off! Your skinny jeans are cutting off the blood supply to your brain!"
fugazi(pronounced fuga.yzi) is old timey slang that should come back like "balls to that" or "gams".The band is also my favourite band.
Strangely enough, Fugazi once counted as "emo", or at least that's the label a lot of journo hacks gave them back in the day. This was before emo = eyeliner and girl pants, and had more to do with the earnestness of the music. A lot of early-mid 80s harDCore bands got tagged that, with Rites of Spring being the first (I think).
Anyway, Fugazi were the first show I ever saw when I moved to D.C. 17 years ago, fitting considering what an institution they are. Totally love them and I don't think they've released a bona fide dud (admittedly, my least favorite album is probably End Hits). If they never record again, The Argument was about as high of a note to end on. And bardonodude is right, he just has it backwards. (It's more reggae/dub-infused punk rock. Just check the rhythm on "Waiting Room" among others.) |

I saw a few $5 Fugazi shows in DC in the early 90s. Maybe I just wasn't up on my underground rock journalism - but I had never heard of Emo and I'm willing to bet that most of the audiences hadn't either. It was all about DIY punk rock, Positive Force, Food Not Bombs and all that. |
Most genre classifications are retro-active anyway, when it comes to bands that try something new.
I'm still pissed that, having been a fan of Fugazi for about 17 years now, never caught a live show. :( |
