It does annoy me that many British bands get forgotten after the usual Pistols/Damned/Clash wave. The early 80's explosion produced some of the very best Punk bands IMO :

G.B.H (aka Charged G.B.H)
Discharge
Amebix
Broken Bones

Never could dig the Subhumans. My knowledge is lacking in The Addicts though.

Have you heard the Subhumans album From the Cradle to the Grave? It's a bit of punk concept album that might change your mind on them. Or maybe not, I suppose I could see them as a love 'em or hate 'em kind band.

The Addicts are really fun feel-good punk. Have you ever heard their song "Chinese Takeaway"?

No I don't think I have.

Alfred 09-04-2008 06:06 PM

I'm very lacking in British 80's punk.

jackhammer 09-04-2008 06:09 PM

Scroll up and you have 4 good names there.

Alfred 09-04-2008 06:38 PM

Kay. :)

What other punk bands should I REALLY be listening to?

And are there any currently significant bands?

They are good.
I saw them a while ago.
My brother loves them.
I like their version of "doesn't make it alright" by the specials. So true that song.
I also love their version of "why" by the specials.
I can't find it though on record now.
Listen to the specials version of why.
I love why by the specials and I am sure I had a copy by SLF years ago.

god they suck

Surell 09-06-2008 11:15 PM

The ones I could recommend through actual listening would be:

Misfits
Ramones
Husker Du
Blondie (if we're saying they're Punk)
Offspring
the Stooges
the Clash
Television

And I would name some others, but I've only heard 1 or less songs by them. =/

Brad Stengel 09-07-2008 06:55 PM

As far as good recent punk bands:

Jay Reatard
Art Brut
No Age
That "Heres Your Future" song by The Thermals, but nothing else by them.

Fantastic band.

As for The Thermals, their 2006 album was fairly good, IMO.

Surell 09-07-2008 09:20 PM

Would Melt Banana be Punk? Because they kick out some good ****.

I think there considered Noise rock.

Surell 09-07-2008 09:25 PM

True, there is quite a bit of noise goin on there. I just kinda thought of them as Punk, though. =/

Minstrel 09-08-2008 12:07 AM

Punk is a pretty hazy description. I could easily see Melt Banana fitting within "punk." They're noisy, but they're also individualistic in their style and have a furious sound.

Piss Me Off 09-08-2008 05:07 AM

Their early stuff is very much punk, whereas their last few albums have taken on a more noise rock feel. To be fair loads of noise rock bands can have a pretty fair claim to being punk as well, like Big Black.

May I recommend The Saints. The first three albums are all outstanding 70's Punk.
(I'm) Stranded from 1977.
Eternally Your from 1978.
Prehistoric Sounds from 1979.

These 3 albums are from the Bailey/Kuepper line up and all releases after these, when Kuepper split, morphed into basic pub Rock.

The Saints were ripping it up as early as 74 and heavily influenced by MC5, Pretty Thing and The Stooges.

Kuepper went on to form the at times magnificent Laughing Clowns who could be described as Jazz/Punk, for want of a better term, and is still releasing records to this day.

The original line up actually reformed and headlined a festival called Pig City in Brisbane Australia in 2007. Approximately 7,000 people attended including myself :).

GravitySlips 09-08-2008 07:34 AM

The Saints are awesome, good call.

I highly recommend the Laughing Clowns as well.

ADELE 09-08-2008 06:11 PM

has anyone heard of die toten holsen?
They did a great cover of baby baby baby.
Sham 69 are great.
Slaughter and the dogs were a good band.
Generation x were very underated.
Snuff with keep on keeping that dream alive.
And a great song called united states of america by New Model Army.

That british band on Fat Wreck?

They keep popping up in random Last.fm stations (similar to, your recommendations, music tagged as..., etc), but they don't strike me as that great, and I usually go for their style of punk.

ADELE 09-08-2008 06:16 PM

sorry mate i don't get you.

Alfred 09-08-2008 06:19 PM

There's a band called Snuff.

I wouldn't call them good though.

ADELE 09-08-2008 06:21 PM

I would.
that song is brilliant.

It's just that she's pretty pop too, though. To me, she seems more... I guess pop punk.

if it helps the ramones said blondie lost their integrity by having record companies dictate their musical direction.

Well, I'd say most late-'70s punk bands fall under that: Ramones, Buzz****s, Boomtown Rats, Rezillos, etc.

Even the Sex Pistols fall under that, to me. I think their music boils down to simple, catchy pop. With a certain attitude, of course, but still catchy and poppy.

Surell 09-08-2008 07:09 PM

^ True. Buzz****s are tight, too, if I find an album of their's I'm pickin it up.

Adele: Yeah, Call Me wasn't very punk, was it?

ADELE 09-10-2008 02:27 PM

Undertones were great!

Absolutely! Thats John Peels favorite song of all time.

And the Ramones have a point with Blondie, thats why I said her older **** is definately punk, Id say anything before Parralell Lines. "X Offender" is an awesome jam.
