Punk is *** (hardcore, rock, goth, quote, band)

Without punk's back-to-basics, youth-induced refocus of rock music to it's base elements I know that popular culture, music and how we make it, avant-garde, art, hell, even youth culture would be very, very different today. It was an irrepressible backlash, inevitable.

But I personally see the marketable values of freedom and rebellion as distinctly un-punk, surely the torch of musical and intellectual freedom was carried by the experimental musicians of so-called 'post punk'? Punk was a stage of evolution for rock music, and therefore completely necessary. I can't see how anyone could ever expect music to stagnate and faithfully retain the elder generation's standards and pass their aesthetic qualifications...?

Punks influence extends far more than people realise.

Without punk you wouldn't have this

and there's nothing whatsoever 'punk rock' about this album.

^i don't follow on that one, always associated it with a different music continuum, 'trip-hop>>hip-hop>>disco/funk>>rhythm & blues etc...
unless punk got 3-D into music or something? sorry to be anal :S

Punk in the UK was about the political system in place in 76 combined with the old order no longer speaking to kids.
It was about stiffling kids and kids reactions to been stifled and playing a game that was in favour of the old order.
Therefore like a big explosion it only lasted breifly.
What came after was just people acting like punks or people who wanted it to be 76 again.
In the UK most magaines and art in Soho today reflects punk ethos.
It is like pick it up and do it not..go to music school, get a degree in music...play in other bands for years....search for a deal.
It was just set a movement and let your own people come to it and then the A&R men will have to broadcast it as they want profit.
But the politics of the music is what made british punk 76-79 what it was.
It was purely political whereas rock was sex and drugs.

Rap music in the early eighties was closest to punk for black Americans which is why the clash got slightly involved in it.
Rotten loved rap early on for it's attitude.

That is the difference between rock and punk.
Politics.

I can't really give a definition for Punk Music other than its all about the attitude and playing fast doesn't hurt either.

A punk is anyone who reflects some of the ideas commonly presented through punk art like Anti Authoritarian views, nihilism, etc.
Or
A punk is anyone who wears certain clothing and accessories like studs or hot topic t shirts.

Really in the end its just a label for a million different things that have very little to do with each other.

Thanks to everyone who responded especially cardboard...

The thing is though, I had no preconceptions, I was already in my 20's when punk hit the scene. It's just never appealed to me in mas and I fail to see how bands like JD, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Stooges, Husker Du, Dead Kennedy's etc. are considered so great.

Now listen, I realize my opinion on this subject is pretty meaningless of course as I don't listen to much punk post-punk etc. on a regular basis.

It'd be like me reviewing Asian Food, which I don't eat.

I just appreciate such polite thoughtful responses.
