They're not punk. They're just regular alternative with a bit of post-hardcore thrown in.

they do sing about suicide alot, like in their the sufferer and the weakness album, but i still dont see them as emo.

I look at it more like this:

Rise Against is the product of bringing a four peace power pop band together into a room and making them listen to Minor Threat and Gorilla Biscuits for about an hour, before making them watch a PETA video. Then, you stick them into a top notch studio and have them record some stuff.
