I like Nirvana but they're not really musical geniuses, and they certainly were not as innovative compared to the Pixies. In fact Kurt Cobain is probably turning in his grave at the thought of being called a musical genius.

I don't know punk genres are hard to define. So much ambiguity. Sound punk to me from what I see.

I think the original point was that Nirvana and Pixies were more punk in their ethos than the likes of Green Day. Of course, I could have misinterpreted this, but it's what I personally think anyway.
