Doolittle is the best thing in the 80s in my mind, and Nirvana really stand on the shoulders of giants, yet Nirvana are a big band from when I was a kid. I'd still go with the Pixies though. In fact, I say the Pixies are way better.

Any of their three studio albums will do (they're all fantastic). Although, I suppose that On Fire is their best (or most critically-acclaimed) album, so maybe you should start with that.

I used to be really into Nirvana when I was a teenagers. Pixies are way ahead of them in terms of quality though.

Its one hell of an argument. When I heard Nirvana for the first time I was 16 and had been into heavy metal for a couple of years or so. Im not talking Bon Jovi either, Im talking about really heavy stuff like Brujeria. I dont believe Id heard a melody for about 2 years and when I heard Nirvana I really didnt get it. They grew on me though and opened a door into that whole other world of music (post-punk/college rock/indie etc.)

Just because of that I would have to go with Nirvana even though I don't listen to them anymore. I actually sold all of my Nirvana stuff earlier this year because I looked at my CD shelf and realised that I hadnt listened to "In Utero" for about three years. If someone had told me when I was 17 that one day I would sell all of my Nirvana stuff I would have asked them what they were on.
