I like them about even. They both have their great moments. Of course, it is easy to see that Nirvana was greatly influenced by Pixies. Hell, "Surfer Rosa" was I believe #2 on Kurt's top 50 albums of all-time list he made ("Pod" by The Breeders also made the list).

Nirvana seems to get more flack from people for the overtly simplistic nature of their riffs and writing. While one can not argue the riffs Kurt wrote were simple they can not say he was not a good player either (and mean it). Kurt had great dynamics, he knew how to build a riff around the song and suit it well. Never came across as showing off or wanking, just simple pop like melody that worked in his favor. He had that going for him. The same can be said about Pixes as well though.

Overall though, i think neither one is better or worse, mere apples and oranges. I appreciate them both in their own way.

Nirvana's melodies were simple, minimalistic, and beautiful. That's why we remember them. It takes more talent to write that kind of music and then to play it with passion than to wank at a guitar for 12 minutes playing your technical heart out.

The Pixies, to me, never wrote the kind of melodies Nirvana did. But they played with so much passion and had such an edge of experimentation to contrast the simplicity of their melodies that it's hard not to love them.

You are going to hate me! My cousin knows Black Francis and the band pretty well played with them a few times, when the Pixies played in Dublin about 18 months ago we went for drinks after with them and Joey Santiago bought me a gin and tonic pulling a fifty euro note from the biggest wad of notes I have ever seen.

This is a tough call, the bands are pretty equal in my book. I would put them both in my top 5 bands of all time, along with the Beatles, Zeppelin, and the Doors

Did you know that Courtney Love had Kurt Cobain killed, and had the hit staged to look like a suicide?

Barry: BULLCRAP!!!

Rob: How can it be "bullcrap" to state a preference????

Do you realize we never landed on the moon, and the landing was actually filmed in a studio in Hollywood?
Are you aware that several alien spacecraft crashed in Roswell, New Mexico and the Government hid this information from us?
Did you know 9/11 was an inside job?
