Does all this "this is punk / no it's not" hot air achieve anything?

What is the motivation for this pointless nitpicking - why this obsessive need to be able to correctly categorise every artist?

Are we worried that we might mistakenly listen to something thinking it's something it's (arguably) not, and risk our credibility amongst a purist peer group?

How anorak are you prepared to be people?

Rather than end up arguing a futile case about whether or not some act IS a particular genre, you can simply change the slant by making the genre noun into an adjective, by simply adding a 'Y'.

Here's an example:

Anorak 1: "Blink 182 and Green Day are NOT punk bands dude"

Anorak 2: "Perhaps not dear friend, but both have recorded some very PUNKY tunes in their time."

If you find yourself liking a tune by a band you aren't particularly into, from a genre you've decided you hate, WTF is wrong with just going: "hey, these people are usually crap, but this track works for me, I think I'll just listen to it anyway - and anyone else can go F**k themself if they don't like it"? Besides anything else, THAT'S a punk ethic right there.

Live a little. Don't try and pigeonhole your music or yourself - it's a restrictive practice.

To I8 goths, punk is bands like the clash, the sex pistols, the ramones etc, the offspring are pop-rock, not punk-rock.
