Punk is anti-political, if anything. Most of that music is about the bull**** of politics, not about any sort of political consciousness or ideology.

Rjinn 09-25-2012 10:05 PM

Against politics yea that's usually apparent. But no political consciousness or ideology? I disagree. Fascism, police corruption, government, authority, situationism were all addressed. The politics behind anarchy meant breaking the restraints towards freedom and in benefit to others. It wasn't all just some mindless rebel thing (though considerably it is with some punk bands out there).

Forward To Death 09-25-2012 10:22 PM

The ideology of anarchy?

If you speak of anarchy in more pragmatic terms, such as the decentralization of power from the established government, then yes punk really was and is about that. It doesn't need to stay in the domain of a lofty, political philosophy though. The very much alive DIY scene is proof of that. But [for the OP] to bitch about punk being dead... Throw a house show with bands playing your basement. That, or shut the **** up. Punk is as alive as you want it to be.

It's not a good point, though. Or coherent.

I probably didn't explain myself very well, (some) thrash bands can be considered punk, since they ARE punk in the ideology and attitude. Example: Ratos de Porão, recent Violator, Sepultura... Punk is so much more than just the music. I consider (political) grindcore to be really punk.

Good riddance, I know this thread is aimed more at the "scene" than it is at the music but straight up punk is some of them most uninteresting, uninspired, simplistic, and downright lazy music ever made. No doubt punk has inspired a good deal of great music, but most of that music takes a small nugget of punks overall aesthetic and avoids the boring songwriting, lazy playing, and self-centered nihilistic attitudes that define punk music. As far as the scene itself goes, punk did bring about some good, namely D.I.Y. in art, but overall it's mostly a bunch of ignorant college dropouts spewing half baked ideas devoid of any real substance.

P.s. I'm seriously not trying to troll-it just bugs me that somehow people put punk up on this pedestal as some kind of intellectual movement based around a good music scene when I see it as the exact opposite.

What would you consider to be intelligent/good music?

Post-Punk

surfhard 10-08-2012 06:17 AM

pft punk is alive and well

surfhard 10-08-2012 06:21 AM

Punk happened because people like Joey Ramone, Television , Deb Harry etc etc all turned up and felt the mood. Punk isn't generational it's greed.

true punk is like dave warner from the suburbs the pistols and souxie are a product just as fake as duran duran.

REAL punk went un noticed...as much as I hate to say it Lou Reed is real punk

That's not really the point, there are plenty of styles that I don't think are good that I can still somewhat respect- pop country, nu-metal, power metal, and so on. In fact I think the only other style I view with the same disdain is the rap scene that's been so popular for the last few years- Lil' Wayne, solja boy, t-pain... I'm not dissing punk music because it's not to my liking, my complaint is about "musicians" being lazy, doing the absolute minimum they can to get by, not learning their instruments, and just plain not striving to create something deeper and more complex than the same 3 chord verse\chorus\verse song over and over again.

Just so no-one thinks I'm dodging your question, a short unordered and incomplete list of my personal favorites:Godspeed You! Black emperor, the Mars Volta, Converge(a perfect example of a punk influenced band that brings in more musicianship and thoughtfulness), Chelsea Wolfe, Neurosis, Grizzly Bear, Kayo Dot, Other Lives, Mr Gnome, Owen Pallet, Rose Kemp, Nine Inch Nails, Yakuza, Yeasayer

bander 10-09-2012 01:28 AM

Pop punk still lives, you just have to seek bands abroad...europe and such...EMA nominee Trash Candy are good, catchy...

Isbjørn 10-09-2012 02:06 AM

Pop/punk is dead? Really?
There is:

Green Day
Sum 41
Blink-182
Mayday Parade
Boys Like Girls
Fall Out Boy
Simple Plan
NOFX

and they're all freaking awesome, so I don't think pop/punk is dead.

Isbjørn 10-09-2012 02:21 AM

Punk isn't dead. It's changing.
Acts like The Clash, Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys aren't playing anymore, but punk has inspired pop groups like Sum 41, Green Day, Simple Plan, My Chemical Romance, Blink-182 and NOFX.

Scarlett O'Hara 10-09-2012 02:25 AM

I am so sick of threads like these. How can a genre be dead when people are still making music for it? Duh....

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-09-2012 04:03 AM

Genres don't die they just become irrelevant.

In punk-pop's case it always has been.

Rjinn 10-09-2012 07:02 AM

If it is, good. Ridiculous nonsense genre.

Pop punk is music for the kids, we all went through that phase when we were 14 and most of us have grown out of it and recognise it as horribly limited and uninspiring music mostly. Its not really punk, i'd never use the word to describe bands like sum41, greenday and good charlotte etc

someonecompletelyrandom 10-10-2012 07:27 AM

Well, the bands you mention above do indeed suck. But some of that positive California stuff wasn't too bad. Pennywise put out some good tunes.

poppunkkid85 10-10-2012 12:38 PM

pop punk is not dead

That sad part is the scene is decided by little emo kids calling bands like boys like girls pop punk... the genre is so vague now adays

ikvat 10-10-2012 12:50 PM

POP/PUNK is that an antimony?

Pop is what's on the charts, not exactly a genre per se. At one time the stuff that makes it on the charts was listener-freindly - not any more it's just offensively lousey. I mean it is still not very sophisticated or rough like certain types of "heavy music."

Punk is a sub-genre of Rock n Roll, aka Punk Rock. During the 70's in the UK Punk started off as music that made it on the charts. It became progressively more and more agressive. Punk had slipt off into different directions Hardcore (Punk), New Wave and Post-Punk. It was during the hardcore years that it really became anti-Pop.

I do admit that Squirtgun were/still is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Clearly no one in this thread listens to The Copyrights or Dillinger Four.

Not much of a Dillinger Four fan, I like a few Copyrights songs.

Holier Dan Thou 10-12-2012 01:51 PM

I like punk rock and I like melody so pop punk makes me happy.

horseinabar 10-31-2012 07:33 AM

Best pop-punk right now, in my opinion:

1) Man Overboard (****ing fantastic and great guys)
2) Four Year Strong (close to pop-punk)
3) Set Your Goals
4) Real Friends
5) Fireworks (bass player has one finger)
6) I Call Fives

Which one?

and are saying just one finger for his whole being, or one on each hand?

You only need the middle finger for punk rock. And three chords.

That's the one I was hoping for. Sadly, I looked it up and it's his thumb. :(

Newkie 10-31-2012 05:45 PM

Going from someone who used to love Sum 41, Green Day, The Offspring and Blink, to then having a bit of an anti pop punk few years before liking them again, even if a lot of it was cringey, I have to say I think most of the pop punkers nowadays are just ****

I will hold my hand up and say I like Say Anything and Set Your Goal though....

Forward To Death 11-01-2012 02:36 AM

I still end up singing along to Basket Case whenever it's on the radio at work, as much as I hate to admit it.

Charlemagne 11-03-2012 01:31 PM

I've been really getting into pop punk lately...I don't really know where it came from but some bands I've been enjoying lately are

Real Friends
Transit
Handguns
With The Punches
The Wonder Years
Such Gold
Pentimento
Turnover
Man Overboard
Joyce Manor (I call them pop punk, others may not)
