What are you listening to? punk edition.

have one in the metal forum, need one in the punk forum as well.

Vancouver, BC punk greats Death Sentence. Love this band.

LoathsomePete 02-26-2012 04:21 PM

I see your obscure Vancouver punk rock band and raise you this.

Lovecraftian inspired punk, and one of my absolute favourite live acts.

BastardofYoung 02-26-2012 04:30 PM

sounds pretty good. Like the sound actually.... hate the transition effects used on that video though.... jesus, whoever made that needs to just do a still picture or better transitions. But oh well, what do you expect from windows movie maker.

now, I think I will go back to this again.... This EP has been on repeat for days for me. 11 minutes of greatness from Montreal, QB punk legends.

Man, Canada has some great punk rock.

LoathsomePete 02-26-2012 04:44 PM

Yeah, between metal and punk I think Canada has one of the better scenes. I also like the interconnected national community that is shared between many of the artists, sharing venues, opening acts, places to stay while touring, etc. A friend of mine lived in Calgary for a few years and introduced me to a couple of great Canadian punk bands.

Sure it's a little poppy, but the lyrics are great. This isn't really indicative of the band's overall style though, some songs feature more of a bluesy vibe, others more of a fast-paced ska vibe, and even some stoner rock elements, I just haven't been bothered to upload any others.

Then of course no Canadian punk list is complete without mentioning The Smalls, who are just one of my absolute favourite bands. I really wish I was a bit older so I could have seen them before they broke up in 2001, but I'm really holding out hope for a reunion in the future if Corb and Caldwell can get over themselves.

BastardofYoung 02-26-2012 06:11 PM

Yeah, I wish the smalls would get together. Corb Lund is too busy with his mediocre country career to do it though.

Whatever.

BastardofYoung 02-26-2012 06:23 PM

Another classic band from Canada (Winnipeg to be exact)..

such a great album. One of the best bands for sure.

also from the Winnipeg scene:

Not I. Punk rock bowling is a great show every year. I love the venue for the picnic though, its always a blast and a very peaceful day filled with degenerates of all walks of life. I'm rather clean cut nowadays, i cut my dreads many moons ago.

bob. 02-27-2012 12:35 PM

aye sir....looking at those pics just brings back memories of how i used to be before i bought in :p:

nice, Dwarves and Zeke.

Speaking of, my friend Billy Bonito (Hopeless) and his band The Bonitos opened for both of them in Seattle recently.

BastardofYoung 03-05-2012 02:21 PM

no one listen to punk now, it is alright.

seriously, Sockeye..... you rule.

discovering this album was amazing. not since Ween's "GodWeenSatan" have I fell in love with an album so fast. It is just quirky, weird, and.... weird. But it is a fun listen. "Boy With Breast Implants" is one of my favorite songs.

Unknown Soldier 03-05-2012 02:28 PM

I had this strange vision that someone on here was listening to Sockeye and alas my vision was correct.

how could you not like the dead milkmen!

Unknown Soldier 04-10-2012 03:00 AM

With their heavy guitar distortion mixed in with melodies, hell this band sound like Nirvana some 10 years earlier.

sorry.... but no matter who followed up The Dead Milkmen I would have made that reference.

Great use of keyboards in this song. It's simple & fun, even if the lyrics are a bit whiny.

I loove this song

bob. 04-11-2012 02:52 PM

^such a great song :)

i was in a moment of reflection this morning....and i think i came to the realization that its honestly this song song that got me into punk rock....that short clip when Spock does the Vulcan pass out thingy to the punk kid on the bus during the film Star Trek IV....i saw this amazing film when i was something like 10 or 11 and never forgot this song....what an impression

by the way the band is complete fake and consist of crew members for the film....its still a great song

Sneer 04-11-2012 06:49 PM

Articles of Faith were such a great band. I'd go as far to say that In This Life is essential listening for any Hardcore Punk fan. Very influential on the later development of Emo too.

Engine 04-13-2012 11:27 PM

Been listening to old-time Neurosis when they were what I consider punk

Bury What's Dead

And I never really stop listening to old Misfits. This is my favorite version of 'She'

She

There's an independent local radio station I listen to that has a weekly show called "Punk Melody" featuring only current punk bands and I can ALMOST get into a lot of them - but not quite any of them. I'd love for somebody to point me to some (any) excellent current/new melodic punk bands.

yes, yes they were.

I find myself listening to this EP all the time. This song along makes it worth it. One of the best punk bands to come out of Canada. I would put them on the level of Dayglo Abortions, SNFU, DOA, NoMeansNo, Death Sentence, Slow, Beyond Possession, Personality Crisis and Stretch Marks, to name a few... in my overall favorite lists.

Can listen to the whole EP:

Death Sentence - In Flames

Man, this video is great. Remastered by the great Doug Donut, who I think is one of the best drummers in punk rock, peroid. A super great guy as well.

Such a classic band.

Was convinced to listen to these guys from a rave write up in Babylon Burning. Good choice. I love how they have the energy of punk with a sort of world weariness.
