Bad Brains deserve at least a top 5.

Disappoint.

Well.... at least for the ROIR album, which is without a doubt one of the best punk albums ever made. Everything after, not so much.

Hmmm, top 5, I have to disagree. The legend of Bad Brains has grown exponentially over the years, but I'm trying to judge everything by the output of stand out songs.

Although they were defiantly more talented that a lot of other hardcore bands. I think their musical compositions lacked good hooks. I against I and Attitude are good songs, but they don't stand up to something like Police Truck or Holiday in Cambodia.

I think they play some top notch dub though. There was a struggle in the band whether or not to go more reggae, or into hard rock funk direction. I think the wrong side initially one out.

Anyways, I'm really digging the Ghetto remix. Not to sound like a broken record, but if I get enough input at the end and redo the list, they will defiantly be moved up.

Billy Idol & Generation X (Punk Rock/New Wave) era, 70's/80's

One of the big three to come out of England in the 70's, the other two are a bit further up the list.

Well just Billy Idol really, though dancing with myself was originally a Generation X song.

I can understand why they're not necessarily at the top of the list, but I just gotta say that "Neat Neat Neat" is quite possibly my favorite straight up punk rock song of all time. That song makes bad ass look like a pussy.

Now I suppose this is another lowball that I will have to defend, so I do provide some sort of rational explanation. Now, we got to this..... a song that not only speaks to pure hardcore, also brought attention to the PMA philosophy to the scene (yeah, it has become almost a sterile cliche now... but at the time it was a call to arms... and of course, we can state the obvious and get into the fact that HR was probably the last person to really believe it.. but that is just worn out debate)

It is on par with the philosophies of Minor Threat. A hardcore stand out.

Finally, of course:

I do not know what is left to say about this one, we all know it... but no matter, think we can all agree it is a standout hardcore song. No point going more into this one, it is what it is.

Yeah. These songs truly represent the style, and are classics. More than qualify themselves as standouts.

Maybe when you listen to the album, they may not stand out as much, because the flow is great enough that all of it is a standout... but when compared to a lot of what hardcore became... I dare you to find me anything like them that are on this level.

So I can not agree with this opinion of yours at all, that the album has no real standouts, compared to other hardcore bands at all.

To rank them in the middle makes me wonder how you can redeem yourself.

I couldn't agree more, this album is such a standout in general and has some of the greatest hardcore songs ever recorded. I'm sick of seeing twelve year olds busting the shirt out also, but there is no denying how powerful this album was and is. You have already listed the videos I would have referenced. I find their musicianship in particular at a very high level. I love HR'S stage antics and his screeching maniacal vocals, but i've always loved BB'S stellar ability.

I love this thread, but WTB has clearly missed the mark on this one. I love IAI also and consider it also a classic, but it doesn't come close to kicking as much ballsack as their initial recordings. Pay to *** is one of the greatest hardcore recordings ever recorded. I even find myself still vibing with the dub interludes, but I find them a bit tiresome on occassion. Sure HR lost his marbles and they dropped off, but not many bands could touch BB'S in their prime for sheer Ferocity.

Note on Bad Brains

Allright ask and you shall receive, I had a feeling that I dropped the ball on this one,
so I will move them up the ladder, I'm not sure where yet, but they won't show up for a bit.

I'm still not sold on the first album, it's more their reggae that I'm interested in reviewing. There are two other reggae interludes on here, so I need to sit down and review it.

Finally, I don't like taking notes on race, but they are an afro punk band that throws their own cultural sound into the mix. I've already noted I'm not a fan of fusion, but I'll give em another go, though their is a much better band of brothers on this list.

Ok from here on out the list gets pretty competitive, so don't take to much offence when you see a legendary bands pass by. There all good at this point.

48. Lionheart, Genre (Hardcore/Metallic Hardcore) California USA era, modern

Two bands again, making this list has made me review some bands I haven't heard in a while. There has been much hype surrounding Lionheart that I had to give them another spin, so I thought I'd pair them up with another modern hardcore act for now. As for...

Death by Stereo, they've been kickin around for awhile, and I think they are one of the most underrated punk bands out there. If you ever get a chance to check them out live, do so, high energy band.
