I choose Blink 182 because they were my favourite band when I was 13 and i had a big crush on Mark Hoppus.

They had punk roots though. Lookout! was a pretty big deal as far as record labels go. You share a label with acts like Screeching Weasel, The Queers and Operation Ivy (hell, lets even throw in Pansy Division).. they had a following. Those fans got divided once Dookie was released. They had a following to at 924 Gilman Street until 1994.

Can't deny that there is still a punk aesthetic with them. Can't rule Green Day out as a pop band anymore than Blink-182.

Of course those same people may listen to Bieber et al so it's a double-edged sword.

All that being said, I'm pretty much exclusively a fan of the guitar riff in blinks songs and between all the small things, and I miss you, they are pretty well set in that department to be better than GreenDay. Both bands have released some questionable records and IMO, Sum 41 wipes the floor with them both.
Yes I'm well aware that to most members here I'm comparing two ****ty pop punk bands to another ****ty pop punk band but I really think Sum is better than them both.

Sum 41?

back when i was in grade 6 we had a battle of the bands competition (although it was just lip synching and fake instruments). my "band" did I Miss You so Blink 182 is ingrained in my brain and ill always love them. I actually ended up not even being able to go, despite the fact that i had been practicing the whole time. they didnt win and i like to think it was because i wasnt there rockin out the second verse.

+1

Yeah, Sum 41 had a couple moments that were fun. But on the whole, they are one of the worst pop-punk bands ever.

Goofle 07-02-2014 12:37 PM

Sum 41 have a few songs that are completely acceptable on "Metal floors", and "Metal floors" only.

skeetz 07-02-2014 03:08 PM

Yup blink 182 is better.

GuD 07-02-2014 05:28 PM

Ugh.

This reminds me of that NN2S strip where Blake talks about how people get into punk through bastardized pop punk bands like the ones being mentioned and how that very real process taints decent pop punk.

Seriously, Blink 182 is just Descendents without Milo's iconic glasses. I mean, lets just give them and Green Day all the credit for "inventing" pop punk and ignore, oh... let's see:

The Undertones
Ramones
Buzzcocks
Gorilla Biscuits
Descendents
Husker Du
Naked Raygun
Dead Milkmen
Screeching Weasel
Lifetime
Samiam
Jawbreaker
The Queers
Dillinger Four

and countless other bands who did it for the love of punks who didn't take themselves too seriously. Also, **** the Warped Tour crowd. Seriously that **** is ****ed up and at this point is basically just a way for 20 to 30 something creeper ass dudes to impress teenaged girls and get in their pants. I mean how many people in bands from those circles have been picked up on statutory rape cases now? Too ****ing many. And Fat Mike is a lazy, disingenuous, greedy fraud.

GuD 07-02-2014 05:31 PM

All that said I actually do like Green Day sometimes but everything after Insomniac has been mediocre or terrible imo. And, they stole the riff to American Idiot from Dillinger Four.

Mondo Bungle 07-02-2014 06:05 PM

D4 is cool and all, but why on Earth would they get lumped together with all those other bands? They formed in 1994. Green Day released three full length albums by that time, one of which was their most popular.

That was just a general statement though, I don't know the D4 song you're referring to (at least not off hand) that American Idiot rips off.

GuD 07-02-2014 06:13 PM

This off of Midwestern Songs of the Americas, 1998. Pinhead Gunpowder, one of Billie's side projects, actually did a split with D4 too.
