In the late 90's, emo had split up into two directions that reflected each other. The more twinkly, indie-leaning midwest emo bands were on one side, and bands took note of that and added Jawbreaker's and Lifetime's influence, forming the first wave of emo-pop. At this point, it was compromised of bands like Saves the Day and Get Up Kids (which imo aren't bad at all). They were more pop punk leaning, but not the the point of it being too awfully whiny. Near then, bands like Thrice, Alexisonfire, and Thursday were developing their screamo-influenced, pop punk tie-in version of post-hardcore, which I also think is great. However, they had a little more angst in their sound, which was soon embraced by the likes of From First to Last, Underoath, and The Used; who then added the influence of emerging bands like Bullet for My Valentine and Killswitch Engage and took the then skate punk-centered Warped Tour by storm. This was around 2004, when NoFX's Fat Mike was having a publiized fued with the also touring Underoath. I think that would be a signifier of the turning point of it all. From there, scene culture developed and gained traction until it became stuff like Sleeping With Sirens, My Chemical Romance, blah blah blah.

So basically, Thursday-brand post-hardcore+emo-pop=dark emo-pop+melodic metalcore=modern scene culture
Thanks!
