naaah what's not to love about this?

MidnightRambler 06-30-2020 09:23 AM

You managed to post the only track by them that is semi-tolerable, but my dislike of Bikini Kill probably has more to do with the fact that they were grunge-adjacent than their lo-fi engineering.

I'm not a fan of grunge or the culture of the pacific northwest in the early 90s. It was probably the worst time in punk, next to a lot of the mid 90s hardcore like Raid, Birthright, etc.

Interesting, you consider them close to grunge? I'm generally not a huge grunge fan either, with a rew exceptions, but I don't think bikini Kill sounds grunge at all. When I'm talking about bikini Kill I'm basically talking only about the first two records album though, later albums haven't really clicked with me so far

I don't know about most 'energetic', that seems somewhat subjective. But I don't think 'impactful' is subjective, at least if our definition of 'impactful' is the influence it had on the punk scene. It's gotta be 'Anarchy in the UK' by the Pistols - does anything else really come close in terms of impact?

As for energy, I'll give a few nominations:

It's the engineering on the first two records. It definitely has a very grunge production value to my ears. The music itself isn't grunge obviously, it's just the way it was recorded has that very "seattle sound"

I don't like a lot of music that everyone says is great though, and it's not an attempt to be different, it just doesn't move me the way other stuff does.

No I get that, that's totally fair :)

MidnightRambler 06-30-2020 01:50 PM

For instance: GG Allin has terrible production value, but I listen to him because he's hilarious in a very 6th grade way. I have some of his material on vinyl (Legalize Murder, FFD&J) but I more than likely won't be spending any of my own money on his work because it's simply not worth the money when there are better records out there to get.

I like Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, etc but the production value on those albums isn't great either... however the songs are very catchy and I often find myself singing them hours after I spin the disc.

I really wanted to like Bikini Kill when I was younger and thought that I was into revolutionary politics, but I found myself kind of shrugging them off after I downloaded them from P2P due to nothing really sticking in my head. A "girl band" that I do like a lot however, is Fire Party (Dischord).

What do you mean by production value? My technical music knowledge is terrible (not that my general music knowledge is much to speak of compared to the bunch of living encyclopedias here). Technically badly produced albums like the Stooges' Raw Power, or ugly production/bad taste? I suppose those two overlap.
I'm attracted to much of the ideas that Bikini Kill stands for, but strictly speaking I don't entirely agree with them because I think their feminism lacks nuance. But then again, politics in punk pretty much always lacks nuance, that's part of the fun of it, so I suppose taking them too literally is unfair. Also from another point of view I like their lack of nuance and their aggression, because it goes against what well behaved women were supposed to do. But yeah basically I don't care about the politics, I just want to hear Kathleen Hanna **** **** up
And I will check out Fire Party!

Hey don't get me wrong I actually love the bad production of raw power. The fact that it sounds like they're playing in another room leaves it to your imagination just how loud they really were

The Batlord 06-30-2020 04:55 PM

Yeah we're talking about the 90s remix Iggy did himself, not the original Bowie mix, which is fine, but the Iggy mix kicks your nuts right into your skull.

Marie Monday 06-30-2020 04:56 PM

I think I've heard both at some point but I'll check out the iggy mix

It's difficult to put into words what I mean, but I like the production on the disc itself to be clean enough for me to be able to hear the different channels and instruments being used, that's as good as I'm likely going to be able to explain it.

I own an original of Raw Power and while it does sound somewhat dirty, I can still make out the different instruments because I'm listening for them, What I don't like is when everything seems like it was recorded on the same channel but at all different volumes.

Its difficult to explain without being able to show a clear example of it, but I am court ordered not to be on YouTube, so I can't show an example of what I mean.
