De La Soul?

I've been checking the other forums for any mention of this band, but haven't been able to find anything. Have only heard... one? song of theirs in the past, but I rather liked it and would like to know if anyone knows more about this band. I've heard they're more of a rap-ish band, but the song I heard doesn't have much rap in it that I can tell.

De La Soul is an amazing hip hop group.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-11-2006 10:23 PM

Don`t question what they are , just get 3 feet high & rising & enjoy.

Uglycasanova 06-11-2006 10:32 PM

I prefer Yo La Tengo

bungalow 06-11-2006 10:34 PM

=/

I figured since we were on the topic of Spanish names-nevermind sometimes my humor can run dry when I stay up to late. De La Soul is pertty good for a hip hop group.

but, we weren't on the topic of name's, we were on the topic of "have you listened and can you help me out"
If you are looking for similar groups to De La (you probably heard their song "Me, Myself, and I") check out groups like Slum Village or even solo artist Common.

The Ten Thousandth Fist 06-12-2006 03:49 AM

Yeah, "Me, Myself, and I" was the song I heard. Good guess. Anyone have any of their music? It's not even 6 A.M. and I'm tired off my rocker, so I don't feel like going anywhere else right now to download anything. :shycouch:

stakeraiser 06-12-2006 10:40 PM

They really established a style with their first album, and totally buried it. I listened to their recent album, and its almost indistinguishable from many other groups

Pappy GaNuga 11-28-2006 01:05 AM

Cool Beans Ya'll. De la Soul is more of a Funkadelic style of HipHop. Cool stuff though. Peace.

Wontcareok 12-03-2006 11:22 PM

De La Soul
El De Barge

Free Association. Hehe

I agree, I've tried to get into their other stuff and its just not working for me

jackhammer 01-04-2008 02:19 PM

Old thread but what the hell! 3ft High And Rising was probably the album that turned me onto hip hop when it came out. They never reached the same heights again sadly.

Doesn't matter if they don't have the same popularity as they did back in the day. They are still making great albums. The Grind Date was a very good cd, I believe it came out about 2 years ago. Stakes is High is one of my favorite hip hop cds and is definitely overlooked. De La Soul is under appreciated and any self respecting hip hop fan should listen to their albums.

I was'nt talking about popularity, that does'nt interest me in the slightest. DLS Is Dead has barely two good tracks on it. What I have heard from STAKES IS HIGH was'nt that great either, but I love to be proved wrong so I will delve deeper and listen to their latest. On your head be it! ;)

pheurton 01-04-2008 06:09 PM

I preferred buhloone mindstate to 3 feet.

I would recommend Stakes is High over their latest but I really enjoyed both. Buhloone is very overlooked but its sound is not for everyone.

simplephysics 05-29-2008 11:26 AM

Bringing this back to life just to comment on how amazing 3 Feet High and Rising is. What a cleverly disgused rap album.

Ronocadelic 06-06-2008 07:26 PM

rap groups

Albums to check out:
1. Game THeory

2. Illadelphia Halflife

Same here, i basically didn't listen to any hip-hop before them, but that album was a whole new world to me. It's still as refreshing today, not many other acts have that same amount of charm.

Thom Yorke 02-07-2012 11:31 PM

Single off of Pos and Dave's First Serve album coming out in April.

Howard the Duck 02-08-2012 02:23 AM

3' High & Rising does sound rather dated

if you asked me (which probably nobody did), i prefer "Is Dead" or "Buhloone Mindstate"

Sparky 02-08-2012 11:38 AM

hip hop just doesn't age well, unless your ATCQ. I want to say i like De La Soul because i understand their influence and thought put into their sound, but honesty i just can't get into them.

Goofle 02-08-2012 12:04 PM

You see the influence, but despite that, still don't like them, or you can't see the influence anyway?

Sparky 02-08-2012 12:07 PM

I don't really like Beethoven too much either but i can understand the influence

Sparky 02-08-2012 12:09 PM

whups my bad, i thought you were trying to come at me clancy but now i realize it was bad sentence structure on my part in that post.

Sorry

Goofle 02-08-2012 12:10 PM

Ahh I feel ya. Thought I may have misread it.

You are right about Hip Hop being dated, just look at Public Enemy's first few records.

Yeah man. That's why hip hop in general is less about the music then other genres.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (according to a article i read years ago) has been selling significantly better in the last decade then it ever did in its first.

Thats the issue with not having live instrumentation or using computer generated beats, it's like special effects in film, it juts loses its value when compared to the current stuff.

thats a lose analogy so don't pick it apart too hard:bowdown:

Goofle 02-08-2012 12:27 PM

It works.

Mister Jip 02-13-2012 02:42 PM

Im a massive De la soul fan..and even there weakest album is miles better than most other hip hop albums
I would rank there albums

3 feet high & rising
stakes is high
buhloone mindstate
Grind date
de la soul is dead
Bionix
Mosiaic Thump

Push 02-29-2012 07:25 AM

I love "3 Feet High", the first De La Soul album... It was pretty much a revolutionary album when it came out...

Jabuddah 03-01-2012 01:35 PM

De La was so ahead of their time

Love it when an artist is so far out front, it takes YEARS for the rest of the pack to catch up.

TheBig3 12-30-2013 10:18 PM

20 Years Ago, De La Soul Refused To Go Pop : The Record : NPR

You should check it out. Mostly for the forgotten movement in rap at the time.

dca 12-31-2013 04:46 PM

^nice article.

Two of the best De La tracks from the Buhloone Mindstate era were not even on it. one is the Foncett Power remix of Breakadawn, the other is Ego Trippin Part 3 'Egorist Mix' (which is basically a completely different track to Ego Trippin.)

another is the track My MindState which was left off the album but included on Prince Paul's 'Gold Dust' compilation of rarities he produced.

I recently checked out The Grind Date. somehow I overlooked this album, it's much better than Mosaic Thump and Bionix, which were like De La Soul goes commercial rap.

edwardc77 01-05-2014 07:04 PM

If you like DLS you should listen to "A prince among theives" by Prince Paul. PP produced 3 Feet High back in the day.

Gavin B. 01-15-2014 08:11 AM

3 Feet High was one of the first hip-hop classic albums. Eye Know sampled the Steely Dan song Peg.

De La Soul played at my college graduation party (along with the Kinks). De La Soul delivered the goods in their live concert... they had a great back up band and back up singers.

Sculptor 01-16-2014 06:55 PM

I have never heard them. I'll check out 3ft High And Rising .

Newkie 05-10-2016 05:32 AM

Has anyone seen these guys live in recent years? Still worth checking out?

Mister Jip 05-10-2016 06:39 PM

They have a new album about to come out.
