Janszoon 03-06-2012 09:47 PM

I heard some MF Doom song on the radio tonight that sounded like old school Nintendo music. Anyone have any thoughts what it might be? It was pretty sweet and fairly different from other stuff I've heard from him.

Guessing:

Janszoon 03-06-2012 10:05 PM

lol. We definitely have different notions of what constitutes "old school Nintendo music". It was neither of those. I'm talking about a track that kind of sounds like NES music from the 80s.

Thom Yorke 03-06-2012 10:06 PM

Was it just DOOM on the track?

If so:

If not:

Those were the first ones to come to mind as they're kind of glitchy.

Edit: 80's Nintendo music... Hmm...

Lol yep that's gotta be it.

Janszoon 03-06-2012 10:11 PM

Found it! I thought the lyrics sounded familiar, no wonder.

Thom Yorke 03-06-2012 10:16 PM

Wow, what station were you listening to? I don't think I've ever heard DOOm on the radio, let alone an obscure remix.

It was one of my local college stations, most likely Temple.

You guys don't have independent radio stations up there?

edit: Four Tet is obscure up there?

Are you referring to the remix I posted? If so, yeah, I think I actually like it even more than the original. Four Tet has apparently remixed several Madvillain songs, I'm kind of curious to hear them.

Goofle 03-07-2012 07:16 AM

All of the songs posted. But that one was especially awesome.

anticipation 03-07-2012 01:51 PM

I miss this. Doom's falling off...

THAT'S RIGHT I SAID IT.

Surell 03-07-2012 07:28 PM

i don't think he's been productive enough as of late to be falling off. I'd be more willing to call it stagnant.

Actually he did a full album of Madvillain remixes. It's good stuff.

Thom Yorke 03-08-2012 07:43 AM

@Janszoon and Engine, we do but I still haven't heard DOOM. The ones I've listened to (although I don't listen much) are pretty heavy on Indie/alt stuff.

And while DOOM hasn't put much out lately, it looks like we'll be getting a heavy dose this year.

I don't know, most if not all of his latest releases have been subpar in my opinion. He seems to be going for a new audience, and while I know I can't fault the guy for the natural evolution that popularity brings in most rapper's rhyme styles I'm not really digging it. His raps are more forced, seemingly rushed whereas the Doom of my youth penned some of the best lines ever spit. I can't really say he's had a single song that'd be a classic aside from his joint off the new Madvillain album (Victory Laps). Hopefully Madlib can help him regain his form.

How far back are you going back when you say "latest releases"? Back to Born Like This or his collaborations with other artists?

If I recall, anticiP doesn't like Born Like This and I disagree with him on that.
Personally I don't think Doom has fallen off. He has his high and low points but I don't think he's gone steadily downhill.

Thom Yorke 03-10-2012 07:07 AM

I thought Born Like This was definitely his worst album but it had its strong points (Gazzillion Ear is right up there for my favourite DOOM tracks).

I do think that DOOM has been influenced by his popularity in the sense that he's almost seems to be trying to overdo that "patented" rhyming scheme he has lately, by rhyming everything with everything over and over (even more so than in the past), but I don't mind it because it just sounds awesome and he still makes it work.

I'm gonna have to check out the leaked MF Doom. I listened to him much more a few years ago, and it's been awhile since I listened to him. He always has killer beats and such a unique flow. Sometimes I think he trades lyrics for rhyme schemes but it's a worthy trade-off. Or more likely I don't understand the lingo sometimes.

it's just his beats on this one (pretty much all of his big older ones), although he's on one track in here i think. masta ace spits

Engine 05-17-2012 12:52 AM

Son of Yvonne is hardly a new Doom album although it does feature his beats - the same ones you've been hearing since the late 90s.
I personally still love those beats but more to the point this feels like much more of a Masta Ace album as he raps on all tracks and it has a theme built around himself, namely his past and his relationship with his mother, Yvonne. Unless you're absolutely dying to hear it, I suggest waiting until it actually drops so that you can steal a version with better sound quality.

Sort of agree with this, although I didn't find any problems with the quality of my download. If you're just checking this out for DOOM, you might as well just keep listening to his older stuff or Special Herbs. Still though, I really like Masta Ace on this, and I was glad that Orris Root Powder was on it (that beat really deserved to be rapped over).

Track DOOM's on (at 1:42):

This track's probably my favourite:

Wu Tang has used a few of these beats

These are the fondle em fossil label cats rapping. Fondle was the same label that put out juggaknots i think.

These is my fave song by them

I just took the first DL I could find and it sounds pretty crappy. Also, I wasn't saying Ace is bad at all, just that this is more his work than Doom's. I think it's maybe a great album really. I was happy to hear Doom rap at least for a few seconds - that song with him and Big Daddy Kane is fairly awesome.

Mrd00d 05-19-2012 02:18 PM

Monsta Island Czars is tight. Poison Windz is killer, but not shabby at all.

Goofle 05-21-2012 01:19 PM

Oh No & DOOM- “3 Dollars”*|*The Needle Drop

Maybe this should go in an Oh No thread if there is one, but here is better than nowhere.

Classy track.

Sparky 05-21-2012 02:11 PM

That was dope.

That makes like 8 upcoming projects doom has coming out now...if he would just release one goddammit

Thom Yorke 06-04-2012 01:53 PM

Don't worry, Sparky. I checked out Monsta Island Czars a while ago.

What's going on with his collaboration with Jneiro Jarel? I thought that **** was supposed to be released in May. Can't believe it hasn't leaked.

Here's an interview that is referencing tracks and even lines, so I'm not sure what the holdup is.
