Dalek

introduced to me by urban... i got to catch this group perform last night, here's what i wrote about it recently:

"Tue 19 Feb – Russian Circles, Dälek, Young Widows

Somewhere in between Throbbing Gristle and the Wu-Tang Clan lies the magical world of Dalek, filled with computer glitches, swirling noise, and some of the most bitter and cutting lines you will every hear a rapper spit at you. I almost never get very excited about current acts, but it's such a wonderful change to hear a truly revolutionary and progressive group. I don't know how long it will take people to catch on... could be decades... but noise and rap are perfect complements. Nothing puts force behind twisted rhymes and rants like a blast of feedback. Russian Circles were pretty good too, but seemed pretty tepid in comparison."

Really, it was an absolutely amazing show. These guys should be five million times as popular as they are.

cardboard adolescent 02-20-2008 03:05 PM

fuck it, i'm moving this to experimental/avant-garde. maybe it'll get some attention there.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-20-2008 03:11 PM

I still only have Absense.

I was going to get more I just never got around to it.

cardboard adolescent 02-20-2008 03:14 PM

i have a collaboration of theirs with faust which is ok, i really need to get their second album

Seltzer 02-20-2008 04:56 PM

Absence is really quite good. An open-minded and knowledgeable troll from another forum turned me onto them.

monellia 02-25-2008 02:52 PM

I haven't heard any of their albums aside from Absence, which I dig very much. It's urgent and honest and has some really beautiful moments. They don't seem to confine themselves to the restrictions of genre, which is something I like in a band. A good example of experimentation gone right!

jackhammer 02-25-2008 04:45 PM

This is a band I have been meaning to check out from an inclusion in a top 100 from Urban. So much music, so little time.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-06-2008 12:43 PM

Finally got hold of Abandoned Language.

It's not too bad , very Massive Attack like.
I was hoping for something a bit more abrasive.

swim 12-21-2008 10:53 AM

Gutter Tactics has leaked (I think a long time ago, eh who cares whatever I just found it), if anyone's interested. I haven't listened yet but I've heard good things.

jackhammer 12-21-2008 11:22 AM

Absence is godly but i have never followed that up. I'm interested.

I'd check out From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots next. That album is about tied with Absence for favorite Dalek album status with me.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 12-22-2008 06:39 PM

i downloaded "Deadverse Massive Vol. 1: Dälek Rarities 1999-2006" from sordo just because it was tagged drone/hip-hop and i was intruiged.. haven't given it a good listen yet though, probably gonna now

Kamikazi Kat 12-22-2008 09:03 PM

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh thank you!

Experimental rap, its about time. Definately checking this out. I've had so much trouble finding rap/hip-hop with experimentation in it. Sure, many rappers blend genres, but not enough of them experiment with noise or dissonance. The only other rappers I know of that are more experimental are cLOUDDEAD and maybe Aesop Rock (although his work isn't really 'experimental' but it does blend genres and styles to create an oringal sound).

cardboard adolescent 12-22-2008 11:13 PM

^^you should check out antipop consortium as well

Demonoid 12-23-2008 07:28 AM

Hmm, I seem to like Abandoned Language more than Absence. When is the new one coming out anyways? I'd love to give that a listen. Haven't listened to these guys in quite a while now. Think I'll get some of the earlier stuff till then.

Sneer 12-23-2008 08:26 AM

I like Antipop Consortium, and i've been meaning to check out Dalek for some time, has anyone got any ups?

jackhammer 12-25-2008 05:05 AM

Gutter Tactics is stellar. Very dark and trippy.

I'm giving it a spin now. Dark and trippy, as you say. Very left-of-centre too - I like what I'm hearing

swim 12-26-2008 03:29 PM

The new one is top notch.

Piss Me Off 12-28-2008 04:02 PM

Got a hold of it and it's very fresh. Haven't got a clue what the dude's saying but it doesn't put me off, it's nice to hear something this original. 2009's off to a good start!

Sneer 12-29-2008 02:45 PM

**** me this album is good

Kirby 12-29-2008 03:06 PM

I guess I'll finally check out Dalek.

What, besides Gutter Tactics, should I check out?

swim 12-29-2008 03:52 PM

Absence is what they're known for.

Absence is very good but the new album is very very good indeed. I am impressed. Why can't all Hip Hop be this interesting?

Kirby 12-29-2008 05:42 PM

Once I get past the noisiness of Gutter Tactics, I'm really liking it. I think I will check out more.

Mase 01-04-2009 05:36 PM

I've listened to Absence and Abandoned Language. They're definitely a very unique rap/hip hop artist. And I like them for that. They do a great job with the beats, especially.

DJB1975 08-17-2009 05:07 PM

Dalek

I think Gutter Tactics is probably the finest album i have heard this year

What do you lot think?

SchwinnHappy 09-01-2009 12:35 AM

Abandoned Language and Absence are the only two albums I've listened completely through, but Dalek is ****ing brilliant. I downloaded Gutter Tactics this after and I'm excited to hear it. Abandoned Language is one of my favorite albums recently, though. So good.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 11-14-2011 02:42 AM

Quite possibly some of the most interesting rappers my generally hip-hop illiterate mind has heard. I listened to 'Absence' earlier today and was amazed from beginning to end.

Mondo Bungle 12-08-2011 05:50 PM

We need more noise rap. It's great.

I agree. I've found a few other artists who kind of fit the bill but not too many.

I assume you have heard of Death Grips. If not... Here's some Death Drips.

Janszoon 12-08-2011 06:52 PM

Yep, that Death Grips album is pretty good.

Sneer 12-08-2011 06:52 PM

Death Grips are great.Techno Animal are the closest thing, I'd say. Totally agree though, there isn't enough.

Janszoon 12-08-2011 06:54 PM

K-the-I and Food for Animals are pretty great examples of it too.

Mondo Bungle 12-08-2011 06:59 PM

Death Grips kick ass.

Electrophonic Tonic 12-08-2011 08:35 PM

Techno Animal's Brotherhood of the Bomb is a good alternative to Dalek. Mostly awkward, buzzing instrumentals, but has some awesome features including Anti-Pop Consortium, El-P and of course MC Dalek.

And Dalek is currently on hiatus, but Will Brooks (MC Dalek) released an album under his side project iconAclass. It's less noisy and little more traditional in terms of what people expect with rap. But it's still quality stuff and he keeps his trademark political edge.

Janszoon 12-08-2011 08:49 PM

If you guys like Techno Animal, I'd definitely recommend checking out another Broadrick project: Ice. Their album Bad Blood is like proto-Dalek.
